Andy Warhol’s initial "Shadows" paintings, from 1978, were presented as a series of 102 canvases hung along the four walls of a gallery, providing a chapel-like setting. His series might raise philosophical questions such as: What is presence or absence? What is reality or illusion? As shadows are ever-changing and may disappear entirely depending on ambient light, they serve as a signifier of life’s impermanence. We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Martin Parr. The documentary photographer was best-known for his incisive shots of everyday life, capturing a day at the seaside or the village fete with sympathy and humour. He leaves an indelible mark on contemporary art.

The city of Detroit has a new public artwork, one that memorializes the lead character in a cult classic film set in the city—nearly four decades after the film was released and some 15 years after the statue was first proposed. Cai Guo-Qiang made his New York debut in 1996 with "Cry Dragon/Cry Wolf: The Ark of Genghis Khan." In this installation, allegory became a lens for examining Western anxieties about Asian power and globalization. A dragon-like form—branches wrapped with inflated sheepskin bags inspired by ancient Mongol warriors stretched through the gallery, while three running Toyota engines underscored the rise of Japanese industry. Archival materials along the wall traced the complex push–pull relationship between East and West.
