The real plan by the government to expand its potential electorate in Ireland.
Ireland plans to grant citizenship to around 5,000 new citizens from over 120 countries at naturalisation ceremonies on 14–15 April 2026 in Killarney. The move is part of efforts by the Department of Justice (Ireland) to reduce the backlog after about 33,000 citizenship decisions were made in 2025.
These 38,000 potential new voters, if they voted cohesively, could significantly influence outcomes under Ireland’s Single Transferable Vote system, where relatively small vote blocs can decide seats. Spread across several constituencies, such a bloc could help secure numerous seats for the government in elections to Dáil Éireann in Ireland, particularly where contests are often decided by only a few thousand votes.
