Someone shared this with me in my DM not long ago. My sister became a mother at 24 with no husband and no plan. The man left before the baby could walk. Our family was supportive in the way Nigerians are supportive. Full of opinions. Short on actual help. The only person who said nothing was Grandma. She just showed up. Every morning at 6am. Knocked twice. Let herself in. Picked up the baby while my sister got ready for work. No fanfare. No sermon. Just there. She did that for 3 years. My sister never asked her to. She never offered. She just decided. When my sister got a better job in Abuja she was torn. Better money. Better life. But Grandma was 74 and didn't travel well. She sat with it for weeks. Then one evening Grandma called her into the kitchen while she was cooking. Didn't look up from the pot. Just said go. Build your life. I didn't raise you to stay small because you were afraid. My sister cried. Grandma didn't. Just kept stirring. They moved to Abuja in January. Grandma died in March. Peaceful. In her sleep. The way she lived. Quietly. Without asking for anything back. My sister called me that morning and said something I haven't stopped thinking about. She said Grandma never once made her feel like a burden. Not one single morning in 3 years. For a woman doing it alone that was everything.
