Ready for new models? -Myth: LLMs gradually lose their memory in long conversations. -Fact: Multi-turn failure is heavy-tailed. If you only measure mean accuracy in multi-turn LLMs, you are flying blind. Previous research blamed this on a general drop in reliability. My new research proves the failure is highly specific: a massive percentage of the risk comes from a tiny fraction of "fragile" prompts. My replication of Laban et al. shows that the median prompt never breaks and the quantile analysis shows the risk is entirely concentrated in a heavy tail. Just 3 bad prompts out of 30 can cause up to 91% of the unreliability. If we want agents that don't spiral, we have to target the fragile tail: detect early wrong turns, keep multiple hypotheses alive, and penalize variance To fix this, change your pipeline: -Track assumption ledgers. -Use multi-hypothesis decoding. -Reward explicit recovery behavior. -Minimize variance, don't just maximize the mean. By tracking quantile reliability over multiple turns, I discovered the "Hump" motif: situations where an LLM's instability spikes at turn 1, but completely recovers to zero by turn 2. This proves LLMs can self-correct if the dialogue constraints are right, pointing to "recovery" as a brand new training objective.

Launched February 9th. Four days later: 7,400+ GitHub stars. This is the pattern no one's talking about enough. Every AI capability that starts expensive gets commoditized within months. GPT-4 level models went open source in 6 months. Now the hardware floor for running a personal AI agent just dropped 60x in weeks. The infrastructure moat in AI isn't sustainable. The only defensible advantage is what you do with these tools — not access to them.
