I don’t talk about this often, but I think it matters. There was a moment in my life where I truly thought I was going to die. My ex had his hands around my neck, cutting off my air, my circulation. He was throwing me around our apartment like I wasn’t even a person. As everything started to go dark and my body began to give out, I remember thinking, “Is this it? Is this how I die?” That kind of fear doesn’t leave you. Years later, I heard something on a podcast that made my blood run cold. According to the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention, if your partner has strangled you, they are over 7 times (750%) more likely to kill you later. Other studies, including research published in the American Journal of Public Health, have found similar connections between non-fatal strangulation and future homicide. Let that sink in. What I survived wasn’t just “an incident.” It was one of the strongest predictors of murder in domestic violence situations. I got out. I’m here. I get to tell this story. But not everyone does. What chills me even more is knowing that he went on to hurt other people. He has domestic violence charges. I didn’t press charges at the time, and that’s something I’ve had to make peace with—but I am grateful that eventually, he was held accountable. That label matters. That record matters. It can protect someone else. If you are in a situation where someone is putting their hands on you—especially your neck—please understand how serious that is. Please take it seriously. Please protect yourself. Please reach out for help. Talk to someone you trust. Contact a local domestic violence hotline or organization. Document what you can. And if you can, report it. You are not overreacting. You are not being dramatic. Your life could be in danger. I’m so thankful I made it out. And if you’re reading this and you’re still in it—I hope you make it out too. ❤️
