The 13th Amendment allowed slavery to continue "as a punishment for crime." #OTD in 1913, prison officers forced 12 Black men into a tiny cell for not picking cotton fast enough on a state-run prison plantation in Richmond, Texas. Eight died because they couldn't breathe. A 🧵1/

Sixty years ago, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom showed us what's possible when ordinary people come together to push for change. Now it’s up to all of us to protect and build on that progress, and create a better future for generations to come.

Injustice survives when "DEI-minded" people defend purely individualist solutions. I say, "Antibias training alone can't eliminate institutional racism," they say, "Why are you against antibias training?" I'm not. I just know its limitations w/o institutional work. ( 1/ )

On Juneteenth, we commemorate the anniversary of the delayed but welcome news of freedom reaching the enslaved Black folks in Galveston, Texas. It’s a reminder that even in the darkest hours, there is cause to hope — and a reason to keep building a country that lives up to its highest ideals.

As Peter Senge said, “systems don’t change, people do.” If we can’t reimagine ourselves, we can’t reimagine education. What limiting beliefs do you want to let go of today?

Give me examples of popular education concepts or terms that pose as meaningful but that often are used in ways that obscure deeper understandings of or responses to injustice. I'll start: fidelity, rigor, "mindset of poverty."

I believe the main difference is that one will see you later and the other will see you in awhile. I could be wrong, I'm not a zoologist.

My Towson math methods undergrads dove into Amber’s Achieve the Core article “Designing Equitable Learning Environments” to kick off our lesson of teaching math equitably. @AmberCook_ , they learned so much and had so many reflections to share because of YOU! ⭐️🙌🏼

#EmmettTill was brutalized, dehumanized, and murdered 67 years ago today. This heinously racist lynching was in response to a lie. But even if it had been true, Emmett should still be here. There’s no justification. The work for justice continues. Emmett would be 81.

Dear Amy, I’m sorry you felt lied to when your school’s principal assigned FRONT DESK. I’m sorry you feel my life and the lived experience of so many other immigrant children in this nation, just trying to do their best, is not your jam. But here’s the thing—

What we admire in others, exists within us. We can’t recognize what we don’t have. Growing our assessment practice is an emergent process of self-discovery.
