@social_brains At Rutgers, there was a popular philosophy course on how to reason effectively about fraught political issues: Current Moral and Social Issues. Try emailing the legal philosopher there, Doug Husak.

Academics, I need your help in designing a new course (and please retweet so I get more fdbk). Many of our undergraduates seem unable or unwilling to discuss difficult topics. They seem to lack tools for understanding what counts as evidence and how to reason effectively in these real world contexts. It seems like they often mistake their feelings for reasons and evidence or simply don’t want to have to discuss or defend their views at all. As universities, countering this should be one of our primary missions so that we are producing a citizenry unafraid to engage on these topics and also willing to listen to and learn from those they disagree with. While it is often forgotten, this is the actual benefit of diverse perspectives. So I’m considering creating a course that not only teaches these skills but requires students to put them into practice, rather than just to learn them academically. Have any of you created a course like this or do you have a course like this at your university? If so, would you be able to share your syllabus?

This biomarker replicated in two other data sets and it can be extracted in a single five-minute resting-state scan. I welcome any comments...

The effect size is large (d=1.0-1.2) and the test retest reliability is much better than most other brain-based markers (ICC=.62). We also rule out a whole list of potential confounds (stress, antipsychotics, anxiety, comorbidities, etc)...

There are tons of papers on functional dysconnectivity of psychosis, so why are we so excited about this one in Molecular Psychiatry? The reason is that we coalesce network-wise patterns to form a highly discriminating AND highly robust biomarker ...nature.com/articles/s4138…

Many visual studies of special populations ensure that compared groups have "normal or corrected-to-normal vision", but do not report if the groups are actually matched on acuity within the normal range. Here, we show why this practice is problematic and how it can be remedied...

These results also motivate a search for the underlying causes such as abnormal gyrification during prenatal development, unregulated synaptic pruning during adolescence, or NMDA receptor hypo-functioning during the illness itself.

...heterogeneous connectivity patterns and working memory task activations compared to ADHD and healthy control subjects.   These findings may help explain why it has been so challenging to use fMRI patterns to classify a person as having or not having psychosis…
