The Ness Labs community has been running for more than 4 years. That’s ancient by online standards! I’m still buzzing from the incredible meetups we hosted in the past month, and I want to take this opportunity to talk about the reality of running a community. I launched the community in response to the loneliness everyone experienced during the pandemic. $49/year with automatic refund to anyone who asks – I’ve been told countless times to raise the price but I wanted it to be accessible to everyone. The early days were intense. 3-4 online events per day, tons of conversations, countless DMs, and I launched my first online course with 600+ students. The community was so tight knit, everybody came together to make a ‘thank you’ video at the end of the year. With the return to normal life, social obligations, the start of my PhD, and my partner moving to the other side of the planet, I started struggling to keep up. I did my best for a few months, but truth is, I was completely burned out. A few members stepped in and started running recurring events & coworking. Others left. I was feeling bad about letting everybody down, but some people still found value in the community, so I trusted them to self-organize or deactivate their account, and decided for the time being to just keep on doing the one thing that never failed to give me energy: writing. However, when I announced I was working on a book, I got the following email from a long-time community member: “Remind me to not buy your book :) (...) Meanwhile the community is dying and wannabe thought leaders are the last active like the wasps on my empty plate. (...) But to get one more book like Tiago and James Clear: No. I wish you all the best but honestly, I’m very disappointed. Anyway, enough ranting. I deactivated my account on circle, removed the renewal. I’m gone.” I feel silly to admit this, but this email made me cry. Nobody likes disappointing other people. But this email was a blessing in disguise. I finally admitted that I couldn’t do it all on my own. Soon after, I hired a wonderful community manager, who’s been helping scheduling events & answering everyday queries. I now run one monthly group call, which is always pure joy. We have weekly coworking and cowriting sessions, all members-led. We have peer learning sessions. And we’re now hosting in-person meetups, which most of all make me feel so grateful for this community of curious minds. There’s not point to this except transparency. Running a community is a rollercoaster. It’s not always fun. People will forget you’re just a human being trying your best. But others will contribute their ideas, elevate others, and step in when needed. I’m happy I didn’t quit.

I'm very burned out of twitter right now. Thinking of renting a big house in the south of France for a few days this summer to hang out, brainstorm, talk about the future. Would you be in? Suggestions to make it a good experience?

@ApresLaBiere I read an interview of the guy who generated it once (can't find it back), and I recall that he wouldn't say what prompts he used, that it was an iteration of many trial and errors, refining the prompt. Based on the date of when it was generated, I would probably say v3

Is there a way to know which version of MidJourney was used for a particular image ? For ex, I suspect v3 wast used for "théâtre d'opéra spatial" but I don't find the info anywhere. Like for a photography, material (software + version) & settings are (the prompt) of interest

@ApresLaBiere C'est vraiment top @wikiwand je l'utilise au quotidien depuis des années. Et en effet l'outil qu'ils ont ajouté avec l'IA permet de bonnes entrées en matière sur des sujets qu'on ne connait pas

En faisant des recherches, je tombe sur un article sur "wikiwand.com" un site qui modernise et rend plus accessible les contenus de wikipedia. Ils ont rajouté un bouton : "Summarize this article for a 10 years old". Voici la réponse l'IA pour la tragédie des communs 👇

@TurcanMarie Ça n'est qu'une question de temps avant que des fabricants de boîtiers trouvent un moyen d’authentifier une photo prise réellement (via les données Exif et GPS, pourquoi pas couplées à la création de NFT par exemple). Tout le monde n'y aura pas accès, mais ce serait un début

AFP Factuel a retrouvé l'image, déjà publiée il y a 10 jours. Ce qui met par ailleurs à mal l'argument "la photo a été publiée aujourd'hui et uniquement sur Twitter, donc ça augmente les risques que ce soit un faux" (je ne le dis pas comme un reproche) twitter.com/AfpFactuel/sta…

Aujourd'hui, on parle beaucoup de cette photo d'un manifestant ensanglanté. Certains estiment qu'il s'agit d'une image générée par une IA, d'autres défendent le contraire. Ce qui est vertigineux, c'est qu'il n'y a pas, à ce stade, de moyen 100 % sûrs de déterminer qui a raison.

On a calculé : taxer la fortune des milliardaires 🇫🇷 à hauteur d’à peine 2% permettrait de financer le déficit prétendument hors de contrôle des #retraites. Du coup, plutôt que de faire porter le poids de la réforme aux plus précaires, nous avons une idée @EmmanuelMacron... 😌
