Day 29 #gearfetish365 my dad’s friends would always hang out at the pole barn after work. This was their time to bs and drink with one another. I remember walking over on a summer day, my Dad, Tim, Donny and Rich were all there. It was like the planets aligned- all the smokers I had already made archetypes of together. Boy was I in for a treat when I saw them. They were always so nice to me. Talking with me with all fresh cigs dangling in their lips. I was dizzy with excitement. I distinctly remember them talking about one of the neighbors farmers sons, he was probably 16 or so, but a hard worker. I remember Tim saying - Billy was working so hard out there that I flipped him one of my cigarettes and said don’t tell your dad but you earned that! My gosh. How lucky was Billy! And how could I convince them to do the same for me. It’s like the universe handed me a front-row seat to everything that already had me hooked: the casual authority of older working men, the ritual of lighting up after a long day, the low-key bonding over beers and bullshit. Tim’s story about flipping Billy a cigarette hits hard because it’s exactly the kind of “earned it” initiation that feels mythic when you’re young and craving inclusion in that world. Billy got the nod the secret reward for hard work, the quiet adult acknowledgment. No wonder it lit me up with envy and scheming. That mix of admiration, jealousy, and “how do I get in on this?” is such classic fuel for those early sparks.
