CBN Governor, Cardoso, says that activities in the Nigerian foreign exchange market reflect a more transparent, self-balancing market driven by willing buyers/sellers.

“Nigeria’s FX market has deepened significantly under ongoing reforms, with daily turnover rising from about $100m previously to an average of $500m, and at times peaking as high as $1bn”- Cardoso.

Cardoso has assured that the CBN is working to improve the customer experience, strengthen consumer protection, enhance transparency, improve complaint resolution, and ensure fair compensation.

Governor Cardoso says the revised FX Manual is a continuation of reforms aimed at deepening transparency and stability in Nigeria’s FX market, reflecting structural changes since the last update in 2017. #CBN #FXMarket

Mr Cardoso emphasised that the CBN will remain a catalyst for SME growth in Nigeria, noting that SME and retail lending is gaining momentum as banks gradually reduce their exposure to large corporates. #CBN #SME

Mr. Cardoso says the banking recapitalisation drive, commended by the IMF, signals strong investor confidence and financial-system resilience.

Cardoso reaffirmed the CBN’s commitment to ongoing reforms, noting that FX stability is key to curbing inflation and sustaining macroeconomic stability, with the sovereign rating upgrade signalling positive economic progress

The CBN MPC projects continued resilience in Nigeria’s economy in 2026, despite risks from the Middle East. Policy tightening, FX stability, and improved food supply are expected to drive disinflation under a forward-looking framework.

The MPC welcomed the successful conclusion of the banking recapitalisation exercise, which resulted in the emergence of 33 stronger banks with improved financial soundness indicators capable of supporting economic growth and financial system stability.

“Gross external reserves rose to $49.49 billion as of May 15, 2026, providing import cover of over nine months and reinforcing investor confidence as well as exchange rate stability”- Cardoso.

Cardoso has said that Nigeria’s economy remains resilient, with Q4 2025 GDP growth at 4.0% driven by stronger industrial and agricultural output and improved performance in ICT, transport and storage.
