From a purely legal standpoint (not a moral or “street” judgment), and based only on allegations, this comes down to whether there was a reasonable belief of imminent physical harm to his mother and whether the force used was proportional. Verbal harassment alone usually doesn’t justify a punch. If it was retaliation for words, that’s typically assault, if it was to stop an immediate physical threat, the analysis changes. People can draw their own personal conclusions, but legally those are the elements that matter.

Seems as if Mr Coakley intentionally harassed Gavin McKenna’ Mom. In her face/called her a “wh-re.” Gavin had to be restrainted inside the restaurant by @PennStateMHKY teammates. The McKenna’ then left the restaurant to avoid the scene when the “victim” followed them into the parking lot. He approached Mrs McKenna when Gavin cold cocked the dude.
