AMAZING RHINO NEWS! 🚨 Black rhinos have made a HISTORIC return to northern Kenya with the help of pioneering science developed at Chester Zoo! 50 years after being poached to extinction in the Loisaba area of northern Kenya, 21 critically endangered black rhinos have just been translocated back to this native part of their range. Our scientists have been working with the Kenyan Government’s @WRTIKenya to help with this momentous translocation. Based on innovative technology and research techniques developed at the zoo over the last 15 years, which use hormone monitoring to provide crucial insights into the health of rhinos. Our Conservation Scholar, Cedric Khayale, also monitored the rhinos’ physiology before they moved to ensure they were fit and healthy to make their historic journey. We’ll now be using the techniques pioneered at the zoo to closely monitor these rare animals as they settle into their new home. The PhD research Cedric is leading, supervised by Dr Sue Walker and Dr Katie Edwards, is central to the Kenyan Government’s action plan to save eastern black rhinos from extinction. Establishing new populations like this is vital for the continued recovery of black rhino numbers. This is a hugely proud moment for us and all those involved in this incredible conservation success story.
