Revolutionary philosopher, economist, and political theorist Karl Marx was born on this day in 1818. This copy of the Manifesto of the Communist Party, published in London in 1935, belonged to sculptor and typeface designer Eric Gill and has his inscription on the flyleaf.

In the 1840’s, other, international “Illustrated News” are strikingly similar in terms (they even sometimes share the same readers’ puzzles). There was an active exchange of literal “clichés” between these different papers.
