Ok guys,
as someone who indeed is a little bit engaged in the Sorare Collecting game a bit and has previous experience with Card Collecting (MTG) a few words about this:
As mentioned before, most of the points mentioned are agreeable to me, but need a bit of context:
1. Sorare has changed its DNA away from a Collection culture.
Undeniably true. When I started out with Sorare in 2021 the appeal for me was certainly to purchase scarce Digital Collectibles that can ALSO used for playing So5 Tournaments.
However, if we are honest with each other, the most significant appeal for me and probably most other players alike was, that Sorare was a money printing machine these days. We speak of a time before the big Crypto market correction winter 21/22 and with 50 Euro Tresholds for uncapped teams with a Common card and a chance to win a Mbabbe Rare that was worth approximately something well in the 5-digit ballpark these days.
They were literally throwing (borrowed) money at us these days.
Wether these cards will ever become Digital Assets one day had to be put seriously in question back then already (and was - card prices were even more bound to the cards utility than it is nowadays)
Sorares "old" (pre-Inseason/Classic-split) business model had elements of a ponzi scheme that would only work as long as enough new users get onboarded to create enough new demand to keep the economy intact.
You, as user these days, always had to anticipate that the party could be over quickly at some point, especially after the crypto winter 2022, killing of many NFT projects.
So I would not say they killed off anything by looking a bit over the plate to see how EA sports markets their licenses highly successful for decades now with completly worthless digital throw-away assets, because it was never truly there. It was - if anything - a justification to invest you could make for yourself.
Adapting on EA principles and onboarding people fro m these bubbles certainly changed the user base to some degree (younger, way more toxic) but it also brought in highly engaged users and even developed some people taking over content creation principles from FUT, so I say it´s just the usual pain that comes with growth that also onpleasent persons might attracted.
But in the end, all these groups together will have to play their part in creating an enviornment for Sorare Cards to become Collectibles one day. You can´t enforce this. Sorare needs a strong foundation, further adoption and a history and culture for indivdiual cards to become collectibles.
If you could carry FUT cards on to the next EA FC game playing it in a special tournament or sth I am sure there would be cards with their own market and Collection community. EA FC has a hard reset every year - Sorares one is really softer. The thing is just - noone bought Grizzis France card 2020 because of the fond memories, but generally in order to win All-Stars and win their investment back as quickly as possible.
And no, this is not necessarily a bad sign for Sorares future as a Digital Asset Collectors playground: When I played Magic: The Gathering as a kid, the best thing you could hope for was to break even with Draft winnings and somewhat refinance your investments. Noone ever bought cards with a longterm-investment- mindset. You bought cards for your decks to win tournaments.
As things went down, my MTG collection is worth somewhere in the middle 5 digits, and not because I ever enforced it, but because I was part of a culture that kept growing, creating an enviroment in which certain scarce assets from the early days could become desireable assets, even though now professional tournament player would use them for their competitions. Its a mix of flair, scarcity, history and a general appreciation for collecting within the bubble that adds value to these cards.
And the very same is - to a certain degree - possible for Sorare, regardless how the tournament play is marketed these days, we are still very early with Sorare, Collecting is the long game.
The Blockchain features alone are great for collecting. I for example enjoy hunting cards that have been held in the wallet of pro players at some point. There are cards who truly exist only once, and so on...
Bottom line: I think by creating a sustainable product which has been going on well over the last two years Sorare builds a solid baseline for a collection game, enabling a culture to grow, establishing its own definition of collection value. The rest will have to come from the userbase it self, a plattform can not really enforce culture.
