We lost Brian Wilson today, who leaves us at age 82—and this hits close to home for me, both emotionally and geographically. In this photo, Brian washes the family car in Hawthorne, California (1963). I was 5 years old, living a few hundred yards away, when this photograph was taken. The Wilson family has been part of my life forever, even (or perhaps especially) my inner life. And not just for me—also for my entire clan. My father went to school with Brian’s dad (I can see Murry Wilson’s signature in my Dad’s yearbook). My uncle—a skilled Sicilian carpenter—helped build Brian’s home. My high school teachers were Brian’s teachers too. But most of all, Brian’s teenage songs of angst were my teenage songs of angst. And it may sound funny, but they still are today. Some things we never grow out of. And don’t want to. With Brian's passing, I will cherish these songs all the more.
