Check out the MIT news release on our latest publication. We have developed tiny, injectable magnetoelectric antenna that can wirelessly power deep-tissue medical implants, without bulky batteries or invasive surgery. This ultra-small device — smaller than a grain of sand — harvests low-frequency magnetic fields and converts them into electric charge via a magnetostrictive + piezoelectric film. The result: 4–5 orders of magnitude more power than similarly sized conventional antennas. It opens doors to battery-free pacemakers, neuromodulators (for epilepsy, Parkinson’s), and continuous biosensors, all placed via needle rather than major surgery. Thanks to the #Mathers #Foundation and @MindPrize for supporting our work! news.mit.edu/2025/injectabl…

Happy to share our latest publication. We have developed tiny, injectable antenna — smaller than a grain of sand — that can harvest wireless power from low-frequency magnetic fields and capable of powering deep-tissue medical implants in a safe, minimally-invasive way. This advancement opens the door for next-generation bioelectronic devices: pacemakers, neuromodulators, sensors — all without tangled wires or large implanted batteries. Our autonomous and non-surgical brain implant paper will also be coming out soon. Stay tuned. ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/docum… #bioelectronics #medtech #implantabledevices #wirelesspower @medialab @MIT @mit_nano

It was wonderful to attend the @MindPrize dinner this year. As one of the 7 awardees nationwide to receive this honor in 2023, this prize along with the #NIH have supported our lab’s work in treating diseases of #aging, specifically #Alzheimer’s disease. media.mit.edu/posts/deblina-… Our #SurgeryFree brain implants autonomously detect the microscopic pathological sites at early disease states, which are not even detectable through imaging and provide highly precise electrical stimulation for correcting aberrant brain signals. Our in vivo animal studies for Alzheimer’s disease show that our customized and precise electrical stimulation inhibits the spread of pathology. This provides a pathway for not only treating but also #preventing the development of neurodegenerative diseases with early intervention as well as opens up new avenues for #cognitive #enhancement. This work is very close to my heart as both my parents are in their seventies. Seeing their health deteriorate with age wrings my heart. Technologies that can extend healthy lifespan, bring a ray of hope! @CahiraTech #BCI #BrainComputerInterface #neurotech #neuromodulation #DBS #DeepBrainStimulation #ImplantableMedicalDevices #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #NeuroAI #longevity #healthspan #TherapeuticBCI

Thanks to The Sontag Foundation for helping us to forge into the field of brain cancer, specifically #Glioblastoma. And thanks to the ChadTough Defeat DIPG Foundation for supporting our work in treating Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (#DIPG). media.mit.edu/posts/prof-deb… While Glioblastoma primarily affects adults, DIPG is a pediatric brain cancer: its delicate brainstem location makes surgery challenging, and existing treatments offer little hope. Both are #terminal #cancers with median survival of only 9-18 months after diagnosis. This is devastating for the patients and their families. We have developed non-surgical brain implants: our #NanoElectronic devices move through bodily fluids, cross the blood–brain barrier, and autonomously target tumors—even microscopic sites invisible to standard imaging. In patient-derived animal models, where #chemotherapy or #RadiationTherapy shows minimal effect, our customized targeted electrical stimulation has halted tumor growth. This is promising for significantly increasing survival. Thanks to the ChadTough Defeat DIPG Foundation for highlighting this research. Our DIPG work has been supported by families who have lost their children to this intractable disease. We remain committed to work hard and to advancing our non-surgical brain implant technology to the clinic! . . . #BrainComputerInterface #BCI #Brain #ImplantableMedicalDevices #neurotechnology

Our work on bioelectronic treatment of #brain #cancer has recently been highlighted by @chadtough Defeat DIPG Foundation. Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (#DIPG) is a lethal pediatric brain cancer, with no existing cure. Surgery is challenging for DIPG because of the risks of injury to sensitive brain structures, in and near the brainstem. We have developed #NanoElectronic devices that can travel through body fluids, cross blood-brain-barrier and reach regions in the brain that are inaccessible through surgery. These devices also autonomously detect brain tumor regions, even microscopic sites that may not be visible through imaging. Our animal studies done with patient derived samples from hospitals shows that, where #chemotherapy has minimal effects, our customized electrical stimulation can completely halt the growth of brain cancer. Our research is supported by ChadTough Defeat DIPG Foundation and families who lost their children to this intractable disease. We are dedicated to work hard and advance this technology to humans. media.mit.edu/posts/prof-deb… . . . @MIT @medialab @kochinstitute @mit_nano

It was wonderful to give an invited lightning talk at the Brainmind event about our #autonomous and #non-#surgical #brain #implant technology, developed in our lab at MIT. This technology has already been proven through our preclinical animal studies. Now we are excited to advance this for human translation through our new #startup. Current brain implants require invasive surgery and are limited to about 1% of the patients. Our technology completely defies the need for surgery, eliminating surgery related costs & risks. Moreover, it enables #autonomous #recognition of the diseased targets to access brain regions otherwise inaccessible. This technology can democratize neural implants to help millions of people suffering from debilitating neurological conditions, which drugs cannot treat.

A #brain #implant that is completely #SurgeryFree is here! No intracranial surgery. No catheters. No surgery related risks or costs! We have built the world’s first #Autonomous and #NonSurgical brain implants for treating intractable neural diseases! This technology can provide highly precise electrical neural stimulation of target brain regions including deep nodes to treat diseases whch are even resistant to drugs. By defying the need for surgery we are breaking the barriers of age, health risks and costs which prevent millions from getting treatment. As a platform technology, this can help patients with neurological conditions such as chronic pain, Alzheimer’s disease, mental illnesses as well as deadly brain cancers and will be accessible to people across a diverse socio-economic spectrum. This technology is based on many years of our research at MIT and has already been demonstrated in our preclinical animal studies. Now we are taking this forward through our new #startup. It was exciting to talk about this technology at the Neurotech Night at New York Deep Tech week and share thoughts with many other researchers, founders, investors, students and neurotech enthusiasts! At the neurotech night, it was wonderful to meet my good friend Jacob Robinson, CEO and founder of @motifneuro, who has developed pea-sized brain implants which can revolutionize treatment of depression and other mental illnesses! Allison C. Waters, PhD talked about neuromodulation through meditation which is transformative! Talk by Jon Nelson about how neurotechnology has transformed lives, touched the heart! This reminded us that we need to work harder to accelerate the progress of neurotechnologies to alleviate the suffering of millions of people around the world. Thanks to Greg Kubin and Caitlin Ner for organizing this amazing night! #neurotech #neurotechnology #neuroscience #mentalhealth #brainhealth
