Don't realise they're being handled (humans are so beyond many spiders' frame of reference for an animal). Or 2. Don't like being handled & try to escape. It's important to remember #spiders are very fragile and can burst & bleed to death if dropped.

A male Araneus alsine recorded by suction-sampler on chalk-grassland at Heyshott Escarpment today. Had it in almost the exact same place in 2016. Amazing how many inverts you only record once during a survey @BritishSpiders @BerryTylan @SussexWildlife @Buzz_dont_tweet
