Outdoor kitchens were set up on the west side of campus, by the Football Players statue (at left), to feed refugees from San Francisco following the April 18, 1906 earthquake.

Tens of thousands of San Franciscans fled to the East Bay following the Earthquake on April 18, 1906. Tents were set up on the Cal campus, including at the football stadium, California Field (now site of Hearst Gym).

April 18, 1906: the pen on the seismograph at Berkeley literally jumped off the paper when the great San Francisco Earthquake struck.
