Canada in Syria

Canada's funding will support the OPCW’s work to verify the scope of Syria’s former chemical weapons program, investigate past uses of chemical weapons and prepare for the safe destruction of remaining chemical weapons, in line with the Chemical Weapons Convention.

As Christians around the world gather for Holy Week, the Embassy of Canada sends its warm wishes to all those in Syria observing Easter — a time of hope, rebirth and renewal.

Canada’s Ambassador Gregory Galligan met Syria’s Minister of Social Affairs and Labour to discuss ministry priorities, civil society, and women’s role in Syria’s future.

Amb. Gregory Galligan & Head of Cooperation Sara Price met with Mr. Talal Kanan, Director of International Cooperation at the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Expatriates, to advance dialogue on humanitarian assistance & development priorities, & explore continued engagement.

Following events in #Aleppo, Canada calls on the Syrian transitional government and the Syrian Democratic Forces to take steps to urgently de-escalate, uphold their obligations to protect civilians, and pursue dialogue to avert further violence.

Deeply concerned by the continued violence in #Aleppo, which is exacting a heavy toll on civilians. Immediate de-escalation, protection of civilians, and renewed dialogue between the transitional authorities and the SDF are required without delay.

I strongly condemn today’s attack on a mosque in #Homs. Targeting civilians and places of worship is abhorrent and unacceptable. Canada stands in solidarity with the victims and their families, and with all Syrians working to counter violence and extremism.
