Enslaved men were sometimes given names suggesting high social status. For example, 2 men called Gentleman (b. 1758 in Africa and 1817 in #Jamaica) were enslaved in John Tharp's Top Hill Pen. The name may have been passed down in their family. shorturl.at/jMBZZ #slavery
