The successful launch of the second Junior Traffic Training Centre (JTTC) for children with special needs at Chere Botha School. This milestone is a vital continuation of the efforts to ensure every child receives critical pedestrian safety education. [POISONS] An article by Cape Town Etc, citing ChildSafe South Africa Poisoning Spike in the Western Cape According to the Global Burden of Disease project, South African children face twice the global risk of dying from poisoning. Each year, more than 70 children under the age of five lose their lives to preventable ingestion injuries. That’s at least six children every month. More than half of these cases were caused by medications and pharmaceuticals found in the home. Household cleaners were the second most common cause, followed by insecticides and animal bites. ChildSafeSA’s own data from January to June 2025 recorded 83 poisoning cases, with 65 involving children under five. The most common age of injury was just one year old. These numbers are not just statistics; they are a call to action. South African children deserve safe homes, informed caregivers, and responsive systems that prevent harm before it happens. 📷 Read more: •capetownetc.com/health/500-poi… #ChildSafeSA #InjuryPrevention #PoisoningAwareness #SafeHomes #HealthPromotion #PublicHealthSA

[IN THE NEWS] A 10-year-old boy was swept off the rocks at Rocklands Beach, Sea Point. Thanks to quick-thinking bystanders, he was rescued and resuscitated on shore. Let their actions be an example: Basic life support, performed immediately and without interruption, even if performed by a layperson, can increase the chance of survival by more than 50%. South Africa loses an estimated 2,000 lives to drowning each year. Over 40% are children under 19, with the highest risk among ages 0–5. Let’s move from rescue to prevention. Earlier this week, fourth-year medical students attended a thought-provoking lecture on Injury Prevention by ChildSafe South Africa’s social worker, Erin Codevilla. One student asked, “Is it safe not to tell a child something could be dangerous?” This sparked a powerful discussion about how children perceive risk and how often adults underestimate their ability to understand it. Applying a social lens to injury: Children are active interpreters of their world. Their developmental stage and psychosocial environment shape how they respond to danger. Transparent communication builds trust and empowers safer choices. #ChildSafeSA #InjuryPrevention #ChildSafety #MedicalEducation #SocialLensOfInjury #HealthPromotiion
