OP_CHECKMULTISIG — Bitcoin's multisig opcode — has a quirk: it pops one extra item off the stack than it should. An original bug. So every multisig spend must begin with a throwaway zero just to feed it. A useless byte, now a permanent rule of the chain.

Before Bitcoin, Hal Finney built RPOW (2004): 'reusable proof-of-work' tokens you could hand off and verify. Its one flaw — it ran on a single trusted server. Strip that away and you're nearly at Bitcoin. Years later, Hal received Bitcoin's first transaction.

Nick Szabo coined 'smart contract' in 1994 — years before any blockchain existed to run one. His favorite example wasn't code. It was a vending machine: take the coins, release the snack, no middleman, no trust required. The idea was old before the chain caught up.

Bitcoin's scripting language has no loops — no 'for', no 'while'. Satoshi left them out on purpose. Without loops, every script is guaranteed to halt, so no single transaction can freeze a node in an endless computation. Limited by design.

Len Sassaman was a cypherpunk who worked on PGP and anonymous remailers. He died in July 2011 — months after Satoshi sent his last message and went silent. Some researchers think the timing isn't a coincidence. His tribute is inscribed in the Bitcoin chain forever.

Before NFTs had a name, crypto had 'Rare Pepes' — frog memes turned into trading cards on top of Bitcoin starting in 2016. A self-appointed committee called the 'Scientists' voted on which were rare enough to count. One sold for ~$38,500 at auction in 2018.

To pre-SegWit Bitcoin nodes, every SegWit transaction looks 'anyone-can-spend' — the signature sits in a section old clients can't see. The 2017 upgrade rolled out disguised as a giveaway. Old nodes assume the new ones are validating.

In 2016, a whitepaper signed 'Tom Elvis Jedusor' — Voldemort's French name — was dropped into a Bitcoin chat and the author vanished. It described Mimblewimble, named after a Harry Potter tongue-tying spell. Strangers picked it up and built it into real chains.

"Wen" is just "when" — misspelled on purpose. It spread through crypto's 2017 ICO boom, when Telegram groups were a wall of "wen listing? wen token?" The deliberate typo mocked the impatience — then turned affectionate. Wen moon. Wen lambo.

Bitcoin transactions have no fee field. The fee is just what's left over — inputs minus outputs, and the miner takes the difference. Forget a change output and you can hand over your whole balance as a tip. It's happened. The fee isn't a setting; it's a subtraction.

Digital cash didn't start with Bitcoin. In 1989, cryptographer David Chaum built DigiCash — anonymous electronic money using 'blind signatures.' Real banks trialed it. It went bankrupt in 1998. The dream was 20 years early; it just couldn't drop the middleman.

In 2011, a viral video gave the internet 'Honey badger don't care' — the critter that shrugs off a snake bite, naps, then keeps eating. Bitcoiners turned it into a motto: 'Bitcoin is the honey badger of money.' Indifferent to hype, attacks, and headlines alike.

Bitcoin aims for a block every 10 minutes — but that's just an average. Block arrivals are a Poisson process: two can land in the same second, or none for an hour. And it's memoryless — however long since the last block, the next is still ~10 minutes away.

Proof-of-work wasn't invented for Bitcoin. In 1997, Adam Back built 'Hashcash' to fight email spam — make senders burn a little computing power per message. A decade later, Satoshi cited it in the Bitcoin whitepaper. A spam filter became the engine of money.

"Whale" came from casinos — the high-roller who bets fortunes. Crypto borrowed it for its biggest holders, then built a whole ocean below: shrimp, crab, fish, dolphin, shark... up to the humpback. Your stack, ranked as a sea creature.

Bitcoin's block size limit is famously 1 MB. Yet blocks routinely sail past 2 MB. The trick: in 2017 SegWit stopped counting bytes and started counting 'weight,' with signature data discounted to 1/4. The 1 MB rule still stands on paper — the room quietly grew ~4x.

May 20, 2020: 50 BTC mined in Feb 2009 — silent for 11 years — suddenly moved. Markets dipped on one fear: had Satoshi returned? Analysts checked the block against the coins he likely mined. No match. Someone mined Bitcoin's earliest days, then vanished. Who?

'Cypherpunk' began as a pun. In 1992, hacker Jude Milhon — handle 'St. Jude' — blended 'cipher' with 'cyberpunk' to name a circle mailing each other code to fight surveillance. Decades later, their ideas became the foundation Bitcoin was built on.

Bitcoin's block reward halving isn't division — it's a bit shift. The reward is right-shifted once per halving. But shifting a 64-bit integer 64+ times is undefined in C++, so a guard forces it to zero at halving 64. A consensus rule that dodges a language quirk.

Buried in Satoshi's original Bitcoin code (2009): an unfinished video poker game. The earliest versions also carried a half-built peer-to-peer marketplace. Both were quietly stripped out before long — and nobody has ever fully explained what they were doing in there.
