After years of deliberation and a fair amount of nuddging (!), yesterday I attended the Clothworkers Hall in the City, where the council of the Clockmakers were sitting and was admitted as a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers.

Last night Tabea Rude gave the WCC Harrison lecture 2022, 'Forever Addicted to the Mechanical -Rudolf Kaftan and the Vienna Clock Museum'. A fascinating talk about a great museum! Huge thanks to Bonham’s Clock Department @Bonhamsclocks for their sponsorship

Today’s Advent Tax is Clock tax, imposed in 1797 by Pitt, a tax of five shillings on every clock, and two shillings and sixpence on silver or other metal watches, with a ‘luxury’ tax of ten shillings on gold pocket watches! ⁦@ClockmakersMus⁩ , one for you!🎄🎄🎄

@JesusArchives @JesusCollegeCam @WCSIM1 This is part of a turret clock’s winding mechanism and is called a sun and moon maintainer. Maintaining power allows a clock to keep power supplied to it, whilst the barrel with the driving weight is being wound back up. Is there still a clock in the chapel?
