There’s a certain kind of morning in St. Louis that only exists on Opening Day. It’s not the weather—it’s the anticipation humming through everything. You can hear it in the way strangers suddenly start talking to each other like old friends, in the quiet ritual of pulling a red jersey over your head like it means something more than fabric. Because it does mean more. By mid-morning, downtown starts to swell. You see a sea of red creeping in from every direction, pouring toward Busch Stadium like a pilgrimage. Families, lifelong fans, first-timers, people who remember championships like they were yesterday and people who only know them as stories—everyone converging with the same purpose. It’s baseball, sure. But it’s also memory, identity, inheritance. You walk past vendors already calling out, the smell of ballpark dogs mixing with fresh popcorn, and somewhere a radio is playing the pregame show, the voices familiar and comforting like they’ve been waiting all winter just to say, “We’re back.” And that’s the thing—we’re back. Not just the team. All of it. The rhythm of summer hasn’t started yet, but you can feel it warming up. The crack of the bat that hasn’t happened yet already echoes in your head. You think about the long season ahead—162 games, each one its own small story—and somehow today feels like all of them at once. Possibility stacked on possibility. Inside the ballpark, the field looks impossibly green, like it’s been painted overnight. The lines are too perfect. The bases too white. It almost doesn’t seem real until the players come out, and then suddenly it is. Completely. The anthem hits differently today. Hats off, hands over hearts, a stadium full of people standing a little straighter. There’s a moment—right before the first pitch—where everything holds. Conversations stop. Beers pause halfway to lips. Even the breeze feels like it’s waiting. And then the pitch comes. Just one pitch. Just one game. But somehow, it carries the weight of a whole city’s hope with it. That’s Opening Day in St. Louis. It’s not just the start of a season. It’s a promise. And it’s here.

All I’ve tried to do for the past 2 weeks is lift people up. Raise their spirits. Make them part of this Super Bowl experience. And what do I get for my trouble? People being nasty beyond belief to me. Well we may have lost but at least I can still rest my head on the pillow tonight knowing I win and lose with class. Unlike a lot of people online.
