SC Coaches, good afternoon! Over the past few weeks we’ve been compiling and organizing program data from 2015–2025 (pre- and post-COVID) to identify trends that can help South Carolina high school football continue to grow. I’ve attached an overall spreadsheet that includes regular-season and playoff performance for all programs. We’ve already identified several trends and ways coaches and programs can use this information. If you have questions, spot anything that needs corrected, or have suggestions for additional data to include, please reach out. Lastly, shoutout to Coach Bendig (Phillip Simmons) @coachbendig and Coach McKoy (James Island) @CoachJMcKoy their programs have shown the biggest turnarounds over the past 10 years in our state. SC FB Coaches, As we enter spring break, we want to extend an open invitation for SC football coaches to communicate with us. More than 100 coaches participated in our recent survey, and many have already reached out with suggestions, critiques, and other valuable ideas. If you do not feel comfortable replying publicly or posting comments on social media, please feel free to DM, email, or text us anytime regarding topics discussed here on SportsYou. Several coaches have shared that they hesitate to comment publicly because of concerns about backlash or ridicule from others. We want you to know that we are here to serve the coaches of this great state and to help be a voice for those who feel they do not have one. Our state is filled with outstanding coaches and men who want to see young people, our programs, and our profession continue to develop and grow. Free advice for football coaches: 1. If you draw up an offensive play, always draw up a defense. 2. Calling plays is hard. It's easy to question after the fact. Everyone’s a great play caller on the ride home. 3. If your players are confused, it’s probably your fault and it's too complex. Don’t assume they get it. 4. Stop obsessing over titles. Be ready when your shot comes. 5. You probably aren't as good at “winging it” as you think. Preparation is key. 6. If you only talk to kids when they mess up, don’t expect them to listen when it matters. 7. Everyone wants to call plays… until it’s 3rd & 8 with the game on the line. 8. If your system only works with great players, it’s not a great system. 9. If practice isn’t organized, don’t expect Friday night to magically be. 10. Stop blaming “kids these days.” Part of coaching is just adjusting. 11. Halftime adjustments sound great… but we would tell them before halftime if we knew what to say. 12. Film doesn’t lie, but coaches sometimes do about what they see on it. Just my opinion, we don’t have to agree.

Good afternoon, SC FB Coaches As many of you know, we recently conducted a survey to better understand the current state of morale among football coaches in our state. The purpose of this survey was to identify areas where coaches believe improvement is needed and to help bring those concerns into the open in a constructive way. Our goal is not to criticize for the sake of complaining, but to work together in addressing issues that impact football coaches across the state. Here’s a summary of what took place yesterday with the SC athletic directors conference. Also, this is one of the biggest topics selected in the survey we sent out. South Carolina athletic directors voted to keep the current senior-transfer rule in place. That means senior transfers will still face the existing penalty of 22 calendar days or one-third of the maximum contests, whichever is less, in sports they played during the previous 12 months. In other words, no new flexibility was added, but no harsher penalty was approved either.
