On 3rd Dec 2025, SPARC's COMPLUS team organised a symposium of all health committees to meet each other and share and exchange knowledge around the issues that they are facing and are working with the city to address them. Here are a few glimpses of the event.

As part of the process of developing their work, @cebrap hosted webinars on 22 and 30 September and 14 October, where research was presented with a discussed between experts in the evaluation and public health field

With the support of Salzburg Global and the RWJ Foundation, the COMPLUS team at CEBRAP convened a group of researchers committed to the promotion of citizen-centred evaluation in health, to counter the traditional dominance of professionals in assessing health system performance.

Key issues included the difficulties faced by the elderly with digital appointment scheduling and public transportation, the lack of services and motivation that keeps young people away from primary care clinics (UBS), and a feeling of helplessness among vulnerable mothers

The conversations with the leaders of five important organizations—Projeto Arrastão, NCI Maria Mãe da Igreja, Instituto Pilar, Associação Santa Cecília, and Estrela Nova—were extremely productive. They revealed both common and specific challenges in the access to health services.

As part of the project "Evaluation and Participation in Primary Health Care: A Study in the Public System of the Municipality of São Paulo"; conducted by @cebrap , the research team began a series of technical visits to Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in September 2025.

As part of its work in Fortaleza, @cebrap had meetings at the Municipal Health Secretariat of Fortaleza with the new admin, the coordinator of CORAPP, and members of the Research Center of the Municipal School of Health to present the research and discuss joint follow-up actions.

COMPLUS capacity building sessions continue in South Africa focusing on community participation in health governance and the NHI. Training held on 29-31 August 2025 included clinic committee members and community members from Khayelitsha in the Western Cape

COMPLUS continues to invest into capacity building of its teams and partners. We bring glimpses of training and capacity building of community members and committee members from two different groups from Khayelitsha #NIHRCEI

Likewise Eastern Cape training included clinic committee members and community members was held in Sub District B of Nelson Mandela Bay. They were facilitated by COMPLUS lead researcher (EC) and Research Assistant (EC) and supported by district forum members.

Western Cape participants included clinic committee members and community members from Manenberg, Heideveld and Athlone. The sessions were facilitated by COMPLUS Project Manager/Capacity Building lead and supported by Research Assistant (WC) and the community coordinators

Despite this, ASHAs remain pivotal to community participation in urban health. Their stories show how participation itself is gendered—shaped by who is allowed to speak, and who is expected to serve. (4/n)
