A lot. and I mean a lot of amateur players and teams rot when told how good they are. Amateur player rankings destroy a lot of the advertised middle and high school showcase superstars. Preseason team rankings are the most useless propaganda in competitive athletics. Early ripe early rot is real.

If I was a High School player starting my season, here's what I would do: (Part 1) Mental tip: Stop wishing to feel confident. Go earn it. Rep out your moves. Barrel the ball in training. Win pitches. Win at-bats. Win competitions. Build results showing yourself that you can do it, that'll build real confidence. Physical tip: Keep your sword sharp. Approach means nothing if your swing can't execute it. Build a consistent, confident swing that can handle multiple pitches and speeds. Be ready. Be quick. Be long through the ball. You can have a Derek Jeter approach but if you lunge and leak 5ft forward it does no good. Build the physical movements to execute, too. -- The separator isn't always talent. It's not even work ethic. It's the hitter who gets 0-3 on Friday, comes back Saturday, and competes like it never happened. ​ Who has a process when nothing is working. ​ Who understands his game well enough to make adjustments. That hitter stays in the lineup. Be that hitter.
