There’s been some characterization and reframing of this situation and myself, but for me it’s always been about the kids and the environment we create for them. This wasn’t about politics, it was about protecting a space for kids. Youth sports should be one of the few places that stays neutral, where differences are set aside and the focus is on teamwork, effort, and growth. Even if something is well-intended, if it makes even one kid or family feel uncomfortable on that field, it’s worth reconsidering. Kids today are exposed to more noise and tension than ever, and it shows up in the dugout. That’s why keeping youth sports a neutral space matters, it gives them a place to just be kids. I raised my concerns respectfully, based on Little League policy and the responsibility we have as coaches to model the core principles of youth sports, integrity, honesty, and character.

A single anonymous outraged liberal parent mad that I received the same benefit as every other sponsor… sparked an investigation by the SacBee (generally fair article), with the sole independent expert saying I’m right. If I was looking for name ID, I wouldn’t sponsor in Rocklin where I’ve been elected for a decade. I was asked to support a nonprofit, and like many many times before, I said yes, reformatted my branding to not be political… and posted the sign like every other sponsor. When the league didn’t care, they got big mad about the law, when the law wasn’t on their side, they complained to the city, when the city didn’t find a violation they went to the SacBee… That did a largely fair article and the independent expert said we are good. Anyway, I voluntarily took down my signs and I’m going to raise them more $$$ for the trauma.

@Patterdude The article didn’t say this was clearly appropriate, it said the league’s interpretation may be legally defensible. That’s very different than saying it aligns with Little League policy or the spirit of youth sports.

@sacbee_news I rock with Joe Patterson. We were college roommates. At one point in time fraternity brothers. Longstanding friends. Our politics have often differed, but my support for him has not. He is a good person. He is authentic. I’m proud and honored to call him my friend.

@Patterdude This appears to conflict with Little League’s policy prohibiting sponsorships or advertisements associated with political campaigns. You, the board, Mayer, "gov officials" can't even keep your stories straight. I have the receipts so I would caution you stop gaslighting folks
