Leaving the AI Safety Summit after some constructive discussions today and yesterday. I voiced how open-source was today the safest way to develop AI, putting this transformative technology under the highest level of scrutiny. With many others, we recalled the enormous opportunities that AI brings for better education, better healthcare, unlocking critical science problems, and making our jobs more rewarding. Transparency and fast information flow across different actors are needed to continue enabling these opportunities. Finally, we were many to stress how any new institutions measuring AI progress should be fully independent to avoid the pitfalls of regulatory capture. And it appears we have been heard! We must ensure that any such institution involves the entire world. More data is needed to understand the limitations of current models, and we look forward to engaging with the AI community to jointly agree on a scientific monitoring framework around new AI capabilities in the coming year.

A new chair in ethics and technology has been established at #WesternU thanks to a $1.5M gift from alum Tim Duncanson. As #AI reaches ever deeper into our lives, bringing an ethical lens to these emerging technologies is more critical than ever. brnw.ch/21wDGCj

He’s the first-ever chief AI officer at a Canadian university. Since the introduction of the chatbot, the education sector has been scrambling to figure out whether to adapt, adopt or ban. Here are four institutions tackling it head-on. trib.al/KSm7iTn

@taylorsmith2 I remember that conversation well; only in my recollection you were a brilliant, passionate, and already-knowledgeable mathematician. And now *you're* the professor! Keep lots of copies of H&U around, and your door open 😃

The printing press scared a lot of people: the catholic church, the rulers of the Ottoman Empire (who banned it), even this Swiss physician. They all feared that books were too dangerous to be put in the hands of the public. In a way, they were all correct. Books weakened their powers by making people smarter and more knowledgeable. Feudalism, autocracy, magical thinking, and rigid religious dogma were eventually displaced by democracy, rationalism, secularism, science, and the Enlightenment. And we are all better for it.
Dr Ahmed Zaidi@_ahmedzaidi

New technology has always generated fear amongst people, even famous scholars. In fact, Conrad Gessner (1516-1565), a famous Swiss physician was against the PRINTING PRESS. At the time, there were 10,000 book titles published by the printing press. This shocked and worried Gessner as he believed that ordinary people could not handle so much knowledge. He demanded European countries to enforce a law that regulates the sale and distribution of books to ordinary people. New technology has and always will create fear. @lexfridman

Welcome back #westernu! Today's tip is to always connect to secured WiFi! Public networks can be risky & make your data vulnerable to being stolen. Make sure you use a secure connection when making purchases or banking online. Link in bio🔗 #privacy #data #cybersecurity #safe

The success of ~6GB diffusion models in generating a rich variety of images suggests that my intuition for the Kolmogorov complexity of the human visual experience was off by at least a few orders of magnitude.

It isn't Sept 1 yet, but @DaleyMaths & I have already had a great conversation about inclusive design, to share the experiences & ideas of disabled students as reported in 79 open-ended survey responses & 16 interviews--they are experts in how @WesternU can become more accessible
Dr. Kim Clark@A_Kim_Clark

Congrats @DaleyMaths! If you are interested in an #EDI lens on these issues, I would love to discuss with you how 75+ disabled students from across campus responded to our survey about which everyday institutional practices make @WesternU more--or less--accessible to them.
