I know there is a lot made about Willie being a maligned genius or a misunderstood maverick but at the risk of the truth getting in the way of a good narrative… I just don’t think that’s true. He was a favourite of Heyneke and excelled for many seasons. He was only really questioned by Bok fans for a relatively short period between 2017-2019… and even then there was no obvious replacement. He’s not Cipriani or Cooper. You don’t play 100 Tests across 3 different coaches without being consistently backed. He’s an unbelievable rugby player really. One of SA’s greatest ever. And I think the majority of (sensible) fans would agree.
