My latest on President Trump's blatant disregard of the Appropriations Clause and multiple laws in paying DHS employees without an appropriation. If he no longer needs Congress for funds, there are no real limits. Balkinization: Presidential Appropriations share.google/LTyp648SkaLDeJ…

Extremely valuable 🧵 on how the chronic U.S. budget deficit is driven significantly by the chronic U.S. trade deficit. Reducing the former without addressing the latter could raise unemployment substantially. Alas, Pres. Trump has made rational discourse about this impossible.
Michael Pettis@michaelxpettis

5/7 capital inflows, require rising debt to prevent slower growth and rising unemployment. The counterpart to chronic imbalances in which excess saving is exported mainly to advanced economies, in other words, is not more investment, as economists typically claim, but more debt.

Perceptive 🧵 about how the Trump Administration is opening itself to be played by the anti-democratic, anti-Western regime in Georgia as that regime helps both Iran and Russia evade sanctions. Very hard to win a war when you keep helping your enemy.
Terje Helland@terjehelland

Georgian Dream has built a system that cannot survive genuine Western alignment. What GD called a "reset" was always a performance. Moscow and Tehran know it. Does Washington understand it? 19/19

Trump’s Iran policy is not strategy. It is panic management. He bombs Iran with one hand, then talks about easing sanctions on Iranian oil with the other — because he knows soaring energy prices could crush him at home. That means this was never about principle. Never about “strength.” Never about some grand doctrine. It is a weak, chaotic White House trying to wage war without paying the political price for war. Bomb the regime. Use its oil. Call it leadership. That is not power. That is desperation.

Lol, this "pivot to China by kissing Putin’s ass" garbage has been refuted by reality many times already. China owns Russia and is happy to use it as the vanguard in attacking the US and the West. Defeating Russia in Ukraine is the best way to stand up to China.
Diana Nerozzi@diana_nerozzi

Trump aims to shift power from China by forging better ties with Russia via Ukraine deal. A Trump admin official told me finding a “way to align closer with Russia” could create “a different power balance with China that could be very, very beneficial.” politico.com/news/2026/03/1…

The only people on the entire planet still pretending that Russia isn’t America’s sworn enemy is Trump and a few clowns and grifters who work directly for him.
Razom for Ukraine 🇺🇸🤝🇺🇦@razomforukraine

Not only is Russia sharing intelligence with Iran, but Iranian drones targeting American forces and NATO bases are also equipped with Russian military hardware. Let’s stop pretending whose side Moscow is on.

Hmm. You mean that we should have trained, experienced diplomats rather than self-interested real estate developers negotiating with our most dangerous adversaries? What a radical thought.
Michael McFaul@McFaul

Putin has lied his entire career. Yet Witkoff says we can take Russia “at their word” that they’re not sharing intelligence with Iran. Taking the Kremlin at face value while U.S. intelligence reportedly says otherwise is utterly incomprehensible and mind-boggling naive.

I’d say unbelievable, but I haven’t been in a coma for the past 10 years. Whenever there’s a crisis, Trump calls Putin and comes out reciting the Kremlin line and singing Putin's praises. Trump is Putin's creature and the GOP is complicit.

My latest showing that the Administration's attacks on Minnesota's anti-poverty programs is pure political vendetta: they are among the better-run in the country, far better than those of red states (e.g., Florida) that the Administration ignores. news.bloomberglaw.com/legal-exchange…

Weirdly, Iranian embassy in Pretoria notified us, Ukrainian diplomats, about opening a book of condolences in memory of ayatollah Khamenei and the military leadership of Iran. I decided to respond - and do it in a public way. The letter explains why. Your Excellency, Mr. Ambassador,   Since you notified the Embassy of Ukraine of the book of condolences for deceased Ayatollah Khamenei and Iran’s military leadership, I feel compelled to remind you the following.   As military allies of the Russian Federation, the deceased leaders of Iran had on their hands the blood of thousands of Ukrainian citizens – men and women, children and elderly – killed with the help of the infamous Iran-made “Shahed” drones and other military know-how so eagerly provided to Russia by your government. Your leaders were complicit in bringing endless grief to Ukrainian civilians.   Being a person of faith, I try not to rejoice in the death of other people, even those who chose to be tormentors of my country that did nothing bad to theirs. But as someone who has spent three years to the tune of Iran-created machines of death howling every night in the sky over Kyiv and other peaceful Ukrainian cities, I cannot help but wish for every culprit to meet the justice they deserve. If not by human law, then in the face of God Almighty.   Ambassador, I do not know you personally and have no grudge against you. Sometimes good diplomats must speak for bad leaders and their policies. But I hope you understand that I won’t express condolences for someone whose death I do not mourn.   Sincerely, Dr. Olexander Scherba Ambassador

Ukraine is indirectly helping bring down dictators all over the globe by tying up their main patron, Russia. There’s a reason dissidents from Iran and Venezuela feel such affinity with Ukrainians. They share a common enemy and a common fight.
Jay in Kyiv@JayinKyiv

Putin's main propagandist complains that the US attack on Iran isn't fair because Trump didn't ask Congress and that it is a "very unpleasant situation for Russia" and that "it would be very difficult for Russia to enter into this conflict" due to the "ongoing special military operation in Ukraine".

Sending a non-ice-rated ship to an Arctic island surrounded by ice in the middle of winter sounds like a very workable idea
Sal Mercogliano (WGOW Shipping) 🚢⚓🐪🚒🏴‍☠️@mercoglianos

🚨Hospital Ship Alerted For Greenland🚨 This appears to be the plan. ▶️USNS Mercy is being crewed up to depart Alabama Shipyard by the end of the week. ▶️She was scheduled to be done by Dec 2025, but work has been delayed. She was scheduled to shift back to the West Coast and resume shipwork in Portland, Oregon with Vigor. A $90M contract was issued in January for March to Sept 2026; that is on top of the $19M done in Alabama ▶️Comfort, which arrived in January in Alabama, will not be done until April. The Alabama Shipyard needs all the ships out by May as it is shifting over to a construction yard for nuclear submarine modules. ▶️If Mercy is selected to go to Greenland, the following issues need to be considered: ⏩️The ship will need to sail to a port (probably Norfolk) to load medical personnel, stores and supplies. This means pulling active duty medical from stations, activing reserves or some arrangements with civilian medical. They will also need to embark an aviation detachment ⏩️Mercy has never operated in the Arctic and the ship is not ice rated. ⏩️If Mercy misses her maintenance window in Vigor, she may face serious operational and mechanical issues and delays in returning to service after a Greenland deployment. ▶️Finally, the Military Sealift Command is experiencing a shortage in crews and pulling the necessary merchant mariners from the fleet may impact other ships and their deployments. This will also continue the gap in the Pacific of no hospital ship. ▶️It is not clear what will be the mission for the hospital ship. Annually, one of the two goes on goodwill voyages to the Pacific or South America. This could be similar, but thosw have extensive planning behind them, along with logistics and funding. Video to follow on What's Going on With Shipping on @YouTube.

Why wait until German troops are required to fight under NATO requirements, if indeed they would? Why wait as Russia murders more Ukrainian civilians? The cost of stopping a dictator always goes up. 12 years ago was much better. 4 years ago, too. Today is better than tomorrow.

Talk is cheap, especially after the 100th time you've said it without acting. Unless you stand up to Trump instead of golfing with him and calling him better than Reagan, this is all just part of the charade as the US abandons Ukraine & the free world.
