“If the spread of reading represented the greatest transfer of knowledge to ordinary men and women in history, the smartphone revolution represents the greatest theft of knowledge from ordinary people in history.”
I compress @j_amesmarriott’s superb new book into a quote tweet.
The national average price of diesel, at $5.49/gal, is less than 35c/gal away from reaching a new all-time record in the U.S.- and with ULSD diesel futures solidly higher, it's looking likely the U.S. will soon set a new record high for diesel.
Such projects have been tried before, with dismal results, but I think Trump is too lazy, too distracted, and too crooked to dedicate himself to the task of building communism in the United States before the midterm elections.
Trump may try for some US-only energy policy: set a US-only artificially low price, ban US oil exports, etc. That's a path to a fully state controlled economy.
Trump is being undone because he can't wrap his mind around the hard fact: America may have its own oil, but it cannot have its own oil price. Latest in @theatlantictheatlantic.com/ideas/2026/04/…
So impressed that @cnn has stuck with coverage of Artemis II, giving it the attention it deserves as a major milestone in human history. Compelling television that is about courageous people taking risks on behalf of all of us instead of those trying to divide us.
When @TheAtlantic colleague @gcaw was driven out of his hotel in Dubai by an Iranian missile attack, he did what any international man of mystery would do: he chartered a boat and went snorkeling in the Strait of Hormuz. Latest David Frum Show youtube.com/watch?v=InB8Ty…
“Trump’s address did not come across as a wartime speech but instead was a disjointed series of complaints, brags, and exaggerations (along with a few outright lies) delivered by a man who looked and sounded tired” theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/04/…
Maybe giving this speech was a bad call. (And who wrote this mess?) Trump is clearly lost; admitting it to the rest of the world is a bad idea.

Happy Passover to the Jewish communities in Ukraine and around the world. I wish the light of these days to bring peace, safety, and goodness to every family. Especially to all those who celebrate this holiday during times of war. It is time to restore security. It is time for all leaders to act together to create greater opportunities for a normal life. It is time for everyone with goodwill in their hearts to unite so that everyone has reliable protection and a good life.
Chag Pesach Sameach!
Wishing a meaningful Passover to all who celebrate - and this year especially, deepest honor and gratitude to the defenders of Israel who ensure that "next year in Jerusalem" is once again something more than a poignant wish for the world's Jews and their many friends.
Trump wishes for an economy walled off from the rest of the world—and that may be why he was unable to predict how the conflict in Iran would affect gas prices, @davidfrum argues. theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/04/…
