Until recently, Hamideh Soleimani Afshar and her daughter were green card holders living lavishly in the United States. Afshar is the niece of deceased Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani. She is also an outspoken supporter of the Iranian regime who celebrated attacks on Americans and referred to our country as the "Great Satan." This week, I terminated both Afshar and her daughter's legal status and they are now in ICE custody, pending removal from the United States. The Trump Administration will not allow our country to become a home for foreign nationals who support anti-American terrorist regimes.

In Iran, we have a well-known proverb about making a bad situation worse: “He set out to fix his eyebrow, but ended up blinding his eye.” The U.S. President sought to restore America’s lost prestige after the destruction of his fighter jet; but in doing so, he also lost several aircraft, helicopters, and his forces.

In Iran, we have another well-known proverb about IRGC: "If there's a donkey d*ck in IRGC's a$s, they will announce a victory saying: This is my as$ that has captured the donkey's d*ck." The Americans came, rescued their airmen, and destroyed their own aircraft so it would not fall into enemy hands. And the regime still came out declaring victory.

To be clear Khamenei is not the premier Shia religious leader. He was one among many Marji's--scholars worthy of emulation and who decided matters of Islamic law to their adherents.

The U.S. just killed the premier Shia religious leader during Ramadan, the holiest month of the Muslim calendar. As a reader pointed out, it’s equivalent to killing the Pope during Lent. Add to that an Israeli missile strike that killed dozens of Iranian schoolgirls. This will stir decades if not generations of enmity among ordinary Iranians toward the U.S., even among those who hated the Islamic regime. The idea that Trump’s war could transform US-Iran relations in any positive way —even if the Iranian people revolt — is pure fantasy. @defpriorities
