Ukrainian forces in Winter 2025-2026 and Spring 2026 have made their most significant gains on the battlefield since Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk Oblast in August 2024 and have liberated the most territory in Ukraine itself since the 2023 counteroffensive.
Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces (USF) Commander Major Robert “Magyar” Brovdi reported on April 9 that USF forces have destroyed nine Russian air defense systems in occupied Ukraine since April 1. Ukrainian USF forces have increasingly intercepted Russian drones since late February and March 2026, intercepting a total of 2,975 in January, 3,679 in February, and 7,674 in March 2026.
Interceptor drones have important tactical battlefield implications as Russian forces rely on drones to disrupt Ukrainian defenses, which, in turn, enables Russian advances and prevents Ukrainian advances. Ukraine’s increasing interceptions of Russian drones are therefore contributing to slowing Russian advances and permitting Ukrainian counterattacks.
Ukraine’s defensive successes, drone adaptations, and mid-range strike campaign are creating compounding effects that are degrading Russian frontline forces.

90 Labour MPs are plotting a rebellion against David Lammy’s dangerous plan to limit our right to jury trials.
The MPs have tabled an amendment that seeks to “kill off” the government’s controversial jury trial reforms. Drafted by Labour MPs and senior lawyers, it proposes introducing specialist rape courts, which would include a jury and a specialist judge. It explicitly removes government clauses within the Courts and Tribunals Bill that would “restrict jury trials”.
The amendment has been put before a committee of MPs for consideration, with its supporters adamant they will force a vote in the House of Commons. It is now seen as one of the main routes to “kill off” the government’s sinister plan to curb our ancient and previous right to jury trials.
Labour MP Charlotte Nichols has put the amendment in her name. Last month, she waived her right to anonymity to reveal that she had been raped and criticised the Justice Secretary, David Lammy, for “weaponising” rape victims to justify his reforms.
Nichols has said: “My amendment seeks to get the government to make good on the promise in our manifesto of specialist rape courts. We know that it’s that which will help ensure timely justice and that complainants and witnesses have the support to give their best evidence — reducing victim attrition in the process and retraumatisation as far as possible.”
Chair of the Bar Council of England and Wales, @Kirsty_Brimelow, has said: “The government should do what it pledged in its 2024 manifesto and prioritise those cases of vulnerable people through a specialist court that would retain a jury and focus on sexual offences and domestic abuse cases.
“We all want to see an end to delays for victims, complainants and defendants so we should focus on what we know will work rather than hacking away at a constitutional cornerstone which reflects community participation in justice.”

Massive Silicon Valley company OpenAI has today paused its major Stargate UK data centre infrastructure project, citing high energy costs and the regulatory environment in the UK.
UK industrial energy costs are the highest in the world (thanks, Ed).
OpenAI and other AI giants are worried that Starmer’s desire (backed by Ed) to cosy up closer to the EU will mean AI in the UK coming under the Brussels’ regulatory regime, which is killing off AI projects in the EU.

Type 45 destroyers are not primarily designed or used for anti-submarine warfare (ASW). They are specialist anti-air warfare (AAW) platforms, with the Sea Viper system and multi-function radar to defend task groups against aircraft, missiles, and drones.
They do have limited ASW features. But they are secondary and constrained, such as hull-mounted sonar (you mention), though that is mainly for torpedo warnings. It is not as capable or optimised for offensive ASW as the sonars on dedicated ASW frigates like Type 23s.
Nor do they carry any shipboard ASW weapons.
