It really should never be forgotten that MIAMI VICE (1985) revolutionized TV by using contemporary pop, rock & new wave music to drive narratives, often replacing dialogue with music montages. #PhilCollins

The criminally underrated action thriller ‘Nighthawks’ starring Sylvester Stallone, Billy Dee Williams, Lindsay Wagner, Persis Khambatta, and Rutger Hauer hit theaters 45 years ago this week 🚔 🚡 🔫

TRIVIA: The script by David Shaber was originally written as a third ‘French Connection’ film, with Gene Hackman's Popeye Doyle teaming up with a wisecracking cop (possibly played by Richard Pryor). When Hackman was reluctant to make a third film as Doyle, the idea was scrapped; 20th Century Fox sold the script to Universal, which Shaber reworked into ‘Nighthawks’. (Wikipedia) 🖤

Manhunter is such a perfect film, William Petersen's role as Will Graham is so gripping and authentic, you can really feel when he's reaching the deep end of his own psyche dealing with maniacs all the time, that first scene he has with Brian Cox's Hannibal grips me every time.

In Carlito’s Way, when Benny Blanco confronts Carlito, De Palma doesn’t cut back and forth like most directors would in a normal dialogue scene. Instead, he keeps the camera at a distance and pans between the two actors, capturing the rising tension between them. And as the scene becomes more chaotic, so does the camera's movements, amplifying the intensity of their performances until the scene finally erupts. This is a perfect example of the type of stylish visual storytelling Brian De Palma is known for, something he learned from studying masters like Billy Wilder -as he’s stated before… “Great directors like William Wilder, when he's staging a scene - just gets the camera in one position and lets the actors act through the emotion of the scene. And you can see the transference of feelings between them... This idea of cutting to close-ups back and forth, I think, shatters the sort of emotion going between the actors - the whole idea of catching lightning in the bottle. Something happens uniquely between the actors as they're playing a scene with each other, and it changes from take to take to take to take.”

John McTiernan on the difficulties he faced during the filming of 'Predator' (1987): "The most difficult thing about 'Predator' (1987) was that I was coming into an organization that had its own notions and to some extent, its own corruption. The production designer worked for Joel Silver, one of the producers, and he insisted that we go to Puerto Vallarta in Mexico. I found out later that it was because he owned a house there or something. But the guy did no research and since that was my first studio feature I wasn’t adept enough to do his research for him. What the guy didn’t bother to find out was that the West Coast of Mexico is deciduous. The leaves fall off the trees at a certain time of the year and it happened to be when we were shooting. So it all turned orange on us. The cameraman and I wanted to go on the East Coast of Mexico that wasn’t deciduous. It was green and it actually had jungle but there were no resort hotels and it wasn’t trendy. We weren’t able to convince Mr. Silver that we should shoot down there. So the hardest thing was trying to pretend that there was jungle around Puerto Vallarta. Then, fortunately, the monster came in and it was bad. We shut down to get a better monster and by then I had a chance to cut the first portion of the film together. The studio saw it and so that gave me a little bit of credibility. When we went back to shoot we went to the East Coast like I wanted to in the first place. That’s where anything that looks like actual jungle came from. It’s a very odd thing. I mean, you so often wind up wearing other people’s mistakes. But they were mistakes that you saw going in but couldn’t stop it and so you try and maneuver out of other people’s mistakes, which is one of the hardest things to do." This is what AI bros are seeking to leverage. Drew Goddard is absolutely right - the creative process is uncomfortable. It's supposed to be uncomfortable because you're a human being creating something new. Not an AI algorithm regurgitating. Learn to love it. And make art. 👍
