Woke up, not to my alarms this morning, but to cops banging on my door doing a wellness check as I slept through every alarm and all 27 phone calls from my coresidents, program coordinator, and bf because I was three hours late to work 🫠🫠🫠

@DGlaucomflecken Residency does this just fine. I also did 28 hour calls in the TICU. Wasn’t necessary as a student.

Kinda torn on this. I don’t think a night shift as a med student is necessary to learn how to practice medicine. However, I think it can be helpful as a way to foster compassion for your fellow physicians. Seeing the chief surgery resident fall asleep mid procedure note after operating all night left an impression on me. Maybe it’s a good idea to show a med student going into internal medicine or emergency med what surgery residents are dealing with and vice versa.
That doesn’t mean a student has to work more than 14 straight hours. How about a night shift surrounded by days off? We need to understand each other’s work lives a little better, so we can be nicer, more understanding colleagues. Med school is the perfect time for that to happen before we all get lost in our own specialties.

Night call is vanishing from the medical school curriculum.
