@jbcarmody "Human interest" isn't nearly as important as the ability to be an actor and project charm and empathy, even if it's totally fake. Patients don't know the difference as long as you're practicing medicine correctly.

An observation, for PDs finalizing their rank order lists: We all want residents who will work hard. Most applicants will work hard to help themselves. Many will work hard to help other human beings. But... a few applicants willing to do the former struggle with the latter.

@jbcarmody Eh, it's 2021 and I beg to differ. Modern medicine is becoming increasingly protocolized and outcomes defined by patient satisfaction. Program directors are better off recruiting sociopaths with good customer service skills who can follow directions.

It takes a certain type of dedication to mature 10,000 Anki cards and rock the USMLE. But IMHO, strong USMLE scores without commensurate clinical evaluations or credible evidence of humanistic interest is a big red flag.

@WrayCharles @PettyHomoMD ...says the guy who's a professor at UCSF. Your success as a doctor IS defined, however, by whether you're able to match into residency at all, which seems to be an increasing problematic issue given the rising numbers of US med school grads who go unmatched.

Not sure who needs to hear this, but your success as a doctor is not defined by where you went to medical school or did residency
