From my perspective as a historical Richard fan, Fate messed up a lot of things and I’ll gladly point them out. That said, I’ve watched most films and TV portrayals of Richard, and NONE and I mean NONE have managed to capture the essence of Richard. I’ve never actually seen Richard I in any of these productions that have attempted to use him for their narrative, not for one second. Ironically, this fictional anime character inspired by him does manage to do that in just 20 seconds with this scene. It’s just this scene but for a few seconds, Fate conveys something many supposedly historical productions never do. Richard’s voice, his depth and complexity. That’s huge to me.

@RegneLent I can look past the super fictionalized version of history in the FGO collab but the way fandom react and turned this brother relationship into an incestous shipping irks me out, and what weir is that many fan seems to tunnel vision themselves with this version of John history.

lol I think my real issue with Fate (FGO? Anyway, Narita) is the way it turns John into this “🥺” misunderstood, secretly loving brother when he absolutely was not. John hated Richard with a depth that the contemporary sources make painfully clear, and more than once he actively benefited from the possibility of Richard dying. There’s no hidden redemption arc there, no tragic “he loved him deep down” angle. Richard’s other brothers, Hal and Geoffrey, for all their rebellion and ambition, were at least direct about it. They fought him openly, argued with him openly, defied him openly and hated him openly. John cowardly didn’t, he hid and then tried to stab him in the back at every turn. And yes, Penman is still a portrayal but it’s one built on extremely careful research by someone who was an academic expert in the Angevin world and grounded constantly in the contemporary chronicles.

@IncarnatedFiend On a serious note I do think fate sanitized him insanely (when they do show glimpses they also show him showing some type of regret) which gets on my nerves and I can only assume it’s to —- sell stuff by making him stereotypically Good Guy (tm)

It's funny there's technically more on screen depiction of Arthur coldly killing his enemies in life than Richard

@klappert_art If Ayaka curse was in effect at all, would Zealot who has connection to Ayaka would already be suffering by it, but so far in the novel her relationhip with everyone seems organic. The curse probably only work if you wish upon her

//HEAVY fsf vol 9 spoilers Considering Richard is even crazier in FGO… if he was THIS impulsive, while “Ayaka” is a thing (creature) that enhances one’s desire, does their bond as Servant-Master works like negative x negative=positive=Ayaka able to tame Richard better?

@pastrevellie tbh Narita is partially to be blamed for this, John x Richard is unfortunately shipped in the JP predominantly by Richard stan. eventhough his historical counterpart thinks very lowly of him.
