@AndrewMayne This is a wild study, glad they are trying it but shocking that they could change the views of 400 people using a chat bot. If that is the case, what are the other implications of communication engineering that will be automated, personalized, or used for good/bad and by whom?

This paper used GPT-4 to sway people about conspiracy beliefs. I think it’s a misleading description of how they used AI because it’s really about persuading people towards group think. The “conspiracies” they list range from crazy beliefs about alien technology to controversies that are open to debate and which there are no settled answers. Calling one side of an open controversy a conspiracy is disingenuous. They list the Covid lab leak hypothesis as a conspiracy. The lab leak hypothesis has a lot of supporting evidence and is believed to be the more likely scenario by many credible people active in the field. It’s not a 4-chan fringe belief. The market hypothesis for the origin of Covid-19 looks less and less likely. Regardless, you can have a strong opinion on either and not be a conspiracist. If there’s never been an exhaustive objective inquiry into the origins how can you call one hypothesis a conspiracy theory? What the authors actually described is a way to use AI to manipulate people towards group think regardless if it’s true or not. AI will be capable of performing many things at superhuman levels, including persuasion. This isn’t something you can prevent through legislation. That could even backfire. It’s something we have to be aware of and keep asking questions. Our best defense is to understand this and call it out when we see it. [Link in reply]
