#SICB2023 I'm so stoked to share a new hypothesis about the origin and early evolution of air breathing behaviors! Come hear about why this had been an impossible question to answer, and how an unexpected observation opens up a new path forward! Today (Friday) 9am Lonestar F

The @BhamlaLab is thrilled to launch the Jungle Biomechanics Lab - an NSF IRES program that brings early career scientists to the Amazon Rainforest and teaches them to do biomechanics in the field! Applications are open until May 31st! Learn more here: tinyurl.com/4m6tfw78.

I am SO EXCITED to say that in Fall 2024, I will be starting my lab @WSUPullman !!!! I'll be an Asst. Prof of Biology as well as Director of the Conner Museum of Vertebrates. I can't wait to move (home!) to the PNW and to join an amazing group of colleagues. Wohoo!!

I wondered just how historical this is, so I looked it up. @SICB_ has had incredible women presidents that have been critical in the development and direction of our society. Most recently before this group, @EvoDevoDiva (2013-14) !! 1/n

This is @SICB_ leadership! Past President Brainerd, President Hale, President -Elect Hernandez, and incoming Prez-Elect Nishiguchi. A historical group of *amazing* women scientists and leaders. #SICB2023

Out now, led by @EgawaShiro from his time as a postdoc in my lab, our paper on the evolution and development of the dinosaurian femoral head, which identifies a surprising, cryptic shift in developmental mode on the line to birds. Open access! (1/9) royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/full/10.10…

If you are interested in biomechanics or foraging energetics or large whales, check out our newest paper in @iobopen: tinyurl.com/3wj9va89! In short - all big whales lunge faster than expected, but bigger whales get more bang for their proverbial buck.

[4/n] To visualize joint RoM, we present the Spherical Frame Projection (SFP) method. SFPs are intuitive to interpret in relation to the joint anatomy because they ‘trace’ the motion of the coordinate system of the distal bone at a joint relative to the proximal bone.

How do salamanders move, and how can we visualize joint range of motion (RoM)? Excited that the final papers from my PhD are now out! We developed a method to collect and visualize joint RoM, and use it to compare salamander hindlimb in vivo and ex vivo RoM. Thread [1/n]

Homology is so important in understanding the evolution of structure, but sometimes we find out that our assumed homologies are wildly wrong. Wow, this is crazy.

Our new work led by Hiroki Higashiyama is published! doi.org/10.1111/ede.12… Sequel to our previous work (doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2…), we argue that the reptilian premaxilla is lost in mammals and is NOT homologous to the mammalian "premaxilla", proposing a new "prevomer" hypothesis

I am absolutely OVER THE MOON to say that my 2nd chapter is OUT NOW in @PNASNews !! We explored the history of biting by reef teleost fishes & found that biting has been a major contributor to their morphological diversification--in just the last ~65 My! doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2…

Fantastic work (and beautiful illustrations) by @EBKaczmarek showing how lungfish use their pectoral girdle AND cranial rib* for feeding breathing. *like a rib...but on your head? I have no idea, you'll have to read the paper. Lungfish are crazy and awesome.
Elska Kaczmarek, PhD@EBKaczmarek

I'm THRILLED that this paper is out in @ICB_journal! 🧵 We found that lungfish air breathing & suction feeding use remarkably similar kinematics & muscle shortening! This suggests that evolving to breathe air didn't need large changes to anatomy/mechanics doi.org/10.1093/icb/ic…
