We have launched the 10th anniversary of our 'State of Health & Care of Older People' report. Did you know? Healthy life expectancy at 65 has fallen to just 11.2 years for women and 10.1 years for men. Read more 👉ageuk.org.uk/siteassets/doc…

We have a new @TheIFS report out today (with @JCribbEcon) on the effects of a higher state pension age on those already out of the labour market in their late 50s. Very few of them return to work as SPA rises, meaning they face bigger hits to incomes.
Institute for Fiscal Studies@TheIFS

NEW: Previous state pension age increases have not been felt equally: women already out of employment in their late 50s were particularly hard hit by the rise from 60 to 65 in the 2010s. THREAD on @JCribbEcon, Anna Henry and @Heidi_Karj’s new research on state pension rises:

As part of the @TheIFS Pensions Review, we drew on a huge amount of data. @ELSA_Study was a key source of data with 20+ years of information on older people's wealth, work and health in England. @Heidi_Karj and I have written about it here: elsa-project.ac.uk/elsa-blogs/ifs…

New study suggests dementia rates declining in younger generations, but data limited by: • High-income country data only • Prediction models vs clinical diagnosis • No socioeconomic analysis Global projections still show cases rising to 139M by 2050 zurl.co/rMp4q

Using #ELSA data, @TheIFS finds that women who work into their early-60s improve their thinking skills and walking speed, especially in active (non-sedentary) jobs #CognitiveHealth #ActiveAgeing
Institute for Fiscal Studies@TheIFS

NEW: On average, working helps women in their 60s maintain cognitive function and delay the onset of physical disability. Not all types of work are beneficial, however. James Banks, @JCribbEcon, Carl Emmerson and @David_Sturrock summarise their new research:
