This resonated. I had a lovely Saturday and then the entirety of yesterday was spent working. Another day away from my family. The cost really is too much.

Working in a school feels much like running on a treadmill that never slows down - and it gets harder by the day. Every cut and the speed increases. Every new demand and the incline rises - again and again. Exhaustion builds and, with no clear end in sight, confusion and concern grow. Colleagues keep running because it’s a vocation and because they care - it’s what they do. But patience, hard work & goodwill can only keep them going for so long - people can't keep running when they are empty. We need to slow things down, lower the incline & support the runners before the whole machine breaks - or they do.

Plucked up the courage to weigh myself. A summer half stone has been gained. It's going to be an uncomfortable few weeks in my work trousers. 🙈

This is the first summer where I haven't done any work - prep or otherwise - before school starts again on Monday. I've needed this break but the niggle at the back of my brain suggests I should have opened my laptop at least once. 🥴

@Gwenelope Have experienced this with both Mum and Dad. Did a lot of reading to help me understand, but the hospice staff and care home staff respectively were excellent. No question was stupid. And in the end, both were very peaceful processes.

This! When my dad was terminal my HoD at school explained to me what happened when his dad also passed away from cancer. Eg not keeping food down, then not drinking water - it was so useful to know as I didn’t panic when I observed it happening.

Those who care for patients nearing the end of life, *please* explain to them & their carers what to expect during the final weeks. People think of death as an event instead of a progression, and unprepared families come to us terrified when symptoms of normal dying arise.

@Miss_Maitland I keep thinking about it but it's the 'what do I do' question that I can't figure out, plus paying the mortgage. This year I give it more considered thought and so the maths. I've loved following your journey.

@EngTeacherOnly I left teaching back in April and my whole life had transformed. I am no longer exhausted, or stressed out, or a shell of myself. I haven’t missed the summer holidays at all because this honestly feels like a constant holiday in comparison… Perhaps there are other options?

Teaching is not a healthy job for me. As soon as 1st Sept arrives, I will not have time to eat a proper breakfast or lunch, I will not have time to drink enough, I won't be able to go to the toilet when my body wants to, I will not get enough sleep & I won't work healthy hours.

@Shabnamagram I feel your pain. I have a run of 16 lessons without a free. With meeting night right in the middle of it.

Just putting it out there - 4 weeks into summer and I'm still tired. Normally I've regained some energy by now just because I cam sleep longer, but this year - nothing.

3.5 weeks left of the hols and suddenly I feel like I can't fit everything in! How do I normally fit work in?

2 weeks into summer: had a wknd away, sold our 2 cars, got remortgaging underway, spent 3 days so far clearing my parents' house, had long overdue medical appointments and end-of-term tiredness is still there. Not relaxed yet!

I've emptied 2 folders so far. So much unnecessary paperwork. But I pretty much remember teaching every lesson. Still too many folders to go though.
