Earlier today, I sat down with the POS guy I usually withdraw money from, and somehow we ended up talking about life.
He told me he was unemployed for almost 10 years, surviving on random jobs while trying to upskill. Nothing seemed to work until someone helped him get a POS stand about two years ago. Since then, he’s just been pushing and trying to stay afloat.
Last week, he mentioned he had traveled to bury his father and the expenses drained him. So today, I sent him some money and he thought I wanted to withdraw the money and asked if he should remove the charges from the amount I sent but instead, I told him it was just a small token to support him. The moment I said that, I saw tears gather in his eyes.
He said he cannot remember the last time anyone gave him money in this economy. I didn’t have so much but I thought to support him a little to encourage him. He is such a jolly good fellow.
Honestly, it reminded me that a lot of people we assume are doing okay are carrying battles we know nothing about. It’s not easy being a young Nigerian man trying to find your feet with little or no support. Some people are really out here hustling with everything they have.
It is well.
