Do you study carbon reserves in trees or woody plants? New special issue at #TreePhysiology on role of C reserves in allocation, remobilization, storage, influence on plant growth, stress response, metabolism, etc. Free to publish, open access available academic.oup.com/treephys/pages…

New paper: The living piñon🌲in this photo (left) has tolerated drought treatment for 13 years (!). While a reasonable question is "why would you do this to that poor tree?" We asked: "how is this tree still alive?" Old reserves may be one answer. nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/np…

Do we also see this disconnect in our data? I used a PCA to project the full dataset onto a linear sub space. Basically, if the angle between photosynthesis and growth is 0, that would imply perfect correlation! As the angle approaches 90 degrees, the vectors are independent.

Congratulations to @ecofiz1 on publication of 1st PhD chapter in Nature Communications! Levels of knowledge: 1) photosynthesis drives growth, 2)environment limits growth > photosynthesis, 3) both growth and photosynthesis are co-limited. We go to #3! doi.org/10.1038/s41467…

I asked ChatGPT about #whatkillstrees. It did pretty well. Clearly its plugged into the literature. The future is wild and a bit frightening....and should I by thinking more about ROS in my work?

@RaquelFeltrin You should know, it's one you made! From your ponderosa study, Ines is counting ducts post-fire

Hey #PlantEcophys enthusiasts - I faintly recall photos of Hal Mooney measuring photosynthesis in Death Valley, where the gas exchange instrument was built into a van. Does anyone have this photo? I might be mis-remembering!

Our paper expanding on these and related points about CMN studies is forthcoming soon, hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

@EnvEcoLab I have a near-perfect rejection record, but as Robert the Bruce said, if at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

When I hear back on submitted proposals, especially from NSF, I expect to be rejected. I am surprised when they are funded. Today I was not surprised. So that panel better not be surprised to see that proposal again in a few months!

@karst_justine @EFrost_Wildwood @jhooooks Thanks for highlighting this. Gonna use this article and thread in my class this spring. My undergrads love to criticize the pseudoscience on this issue in discussions.

@EFrost_Wildwood @jhooooks As for the existing studies cited in the WP article, LMK your thoughts on results. I’m open to being wrong. Also, my ‘group’ is not involved in this. I don’t speak on the behalf of my students when I point out limitations of CMN research.

@jhooooks Time to pile on. "To her, the lush, multilayered understory is proof of a thriving community, where a variety of species ensures that every wavelength of light is put to good use" Remember folks, 99% of incoming PAR doesn't get fixed by plants!
