Rant — People are sleeping on Coinbase. Big banks like GS are working to avoid slow death by getting into technology, APIs (Apple deal), more retail services (Marcus), while grappling with the heft of legacy biz, rate exposure, and unbundling. Meanwhile Coinbase already is what so many banks *want* to become — exceptional institutional team with 25% of the largest hedge funds as clients, 50%+ institutional volume, incredible suite of 1st class tech products (Wallet, Cloud, Wallet as Service, Commerce), a payment rail they co-invented (USDC) that did $2T in transfers in Q4, AND 100M retail *app* (not branch or ATM) users (8M monthly active, which exceeds Schwab). Not to mention revenue mix moving to 50% subscriptions and services. Yes, it has more scaling to go — but that's great. Opportunity, rather than a problem. I feel people allow their views on crypto to block them from seeing that Coinbase has built and is rapidly building Goldman 2.0 — a modern, tech 1st, institutional financial services firm. Meanwhile * Coinbase: $12B mkt cap * Goldman: $115B * Schwab: $110B * PayPal: $85B * NASDAQ: $27B * !Regions Financial: $17B Of course if you don't like Coinbase, you can take issue with a variety of single factors. But imagine dismissing Square in the past because it just had iPhone card readers or Apple pre-iPhone because iPod TAM was small, and feeling IBM and HP safer bets. Coinbase is shown it will innovate in every area and the setup is fantastic. I don't have an issue with the other businesses mentioned above, I admire each. My view is simply that people are sleeping on the incredible prospects Coinbase has in front of it.
