awards campaigns are built on narratives, and narratives are built on how an industry and audience feel about you. winning an oscar is partly a talent contest, but mainly a narrative contest. that is why oscar campaigning is a thing. timothee chalamet should have won best actor because, throughout most of the awards cycle, his performance was the strongest by many metrics. that is, until his narrative began to sour beyond repair. this gave way for the more humble and also talented michael b. jordan to gain momentum and jump ahead of him in the race. it’s hyperbolic to say i think the academy cares about stan twitter. the argument i’m making in the article is that public perception trickles upward. hollywood is a relationship business, and if the conversation around an actor shifts from “extraordinary talent” to “growing ego,” that absolutely affects how they’re received in awards spaces.

No offence but I don't think Oscar voters care about his fandom shift that much considering they reward much worse people all the time. It was simply not his time and that's fine lol

that’s fair. reduction is definitely the idea i’m trying to convey NOT because the persona he’s adapting is “rap star,” but because *his* rap star persona is performative and caricatured, which feels wrong. but that was not fleshed out at all so i understand this pov and accept the critique!

i kinda like the read into his inability to keep his longevity but where i’m annoyed is your reduction of his antics into “a rap star persona”. it comes off so reductive and honestly prejudiced that someone who wants attention and wants to claim it is suddenly someone akin to /
