My #MedBikini because there's nothing unprofessional about a backyard swim, but also my Mardi Gras look because there's nothing unprofessional about queerness. Let's fight back against 'professional standards' as a tool for dismissal of those already disempowered within medicine

@JunkyardAkiyama Unfortunately they really dropped the ball on local advertising in the months and weeks leading up to the event. MJF on morning TV a day or two before is too little too late. There's plenty of superb local talent and good audience numbers at indie promotions - the audience exists

@nibmoss At least in Australia, the cervical screening test has replaced the Pap smear. Because it's testing for high-risk HPV strains and not abnormal cervical cells, you don't need to sample the entire cervix and hence we now have the option to self-collect a sample in Australia

@makennarhicks If you're doing reformer pilates, you can set the springs to very high resistances that can actually help you build more strength in your end range of motion than lifting weights. It's about being informed and deliberate about what you're doing and why

The whole “cycle syncing means you should avoid hardcore exercise” narrative has done women such a disservice. The glamorization of the “Pilates princess” aesthetic and the explosion of gentle, 'feminine' workouts marketed as the enlightened alternative are two of its biggest hallmarks. Pilates is lovely, especially if you're cycle syncing. But women treat it like an alternative to strength training, when the reality is that there isn’t an alternative! The truth is simple: muscle is the most protective, pro-longevity asset a woman can have. Muscle is what keeps your cycle regular. Muscle is what keeps you insulin-sensitive. Muscle is what gives you the “toned, lean” look so many women believe pilates alone will deliver. Femininity ≠  fragility. It’s strength, nourishment, and a body that carries you through every season of your life.
Melanie@VitallyMelanie

Pilates is not a replacement for strength training. Yoga is not a replacement for strength training. Walking is not a replacement for strength training. Cardio is not a replacement for strength training. Building the organ of longevity (muscle) is non-negotiable for aging well.

@jeremyjudkins_ And received follow-up calls in the weeks afterwards so we had the opportunity to ask further questions and attend a yearly memorial service for donors. For me and the rest of the family it was a bright spot in the middle of the worst week of our lives and I'm very thankful

@jeremyjudkins_ Amount of time with him once his heart and breathing stopped and this occurred in the ICU. We said goodbye to him at the door of the OR and were not present after that point. We were provided with de-personalised information about where his donated tissues had been used for

What they don’t tell you about being an organ donor: It’s really easy to just say “Sure I’ll be an organ donor that sounds cool 😃” when you get your drivers license. Just know the following information: It will make your loved ones very traumatized during your final moments. People will talk to your family about organ donation before they have even processed death is an option. No one really says you will be dying soon but it’s just implied by the conversation. It really feels like vultures circling, waiting for you to pass. You will die in the OR, not a peaceful environment at home. You will be wrapped for surgery with only the top of your head and a single arm exposed for your loved ones to touch you. Your death will be scheduled for a specific time. This time can be delayed or changed last minute which is extremely traumatic to your family. Your life may even be extended a day or two longer than your family would have liked.. just so your organs are still good while they work through all the logistics. When they take you off life saving measures, your family will be with you in the OR. The family has to all scrub in… that part is kinda comical and does provide a little relief in that moment. It’s not an environment you would dream about dying in, it’s sterile… surgical lights above. Your family watches you struggle to breathe after the breathing tube is removed. They watch your blood pressure and vitals slowly level out to nothing. Two doctors manually check your heart just to verify passing. They will call the time of death and your family will never forget that time. When you pass away, your family has less than five minutes to exit the room before the process begins. They can’t really give you a hug but they will give you a kiss on the tip of your head through their mask. You have now passed and giving the gift of live can begin. Your family rips their scrubs off and goes home. Hours later, perhaps when your family is enjoying dinner and trying to forget the preceding hours, they will get a phone call “the procedure went great. Your loved one’s liver looked really good. It’s been shipped off now. No we can’t tell you where it’s going right now. ” All of that being said… today someone is LIVING with Donald’s actual liver inside them. That blows my mind! One day soon I will get details about the recipient and maybe one day we can meet each other.

@Brocklesnitch Thank you so much for writing this Bec, fatphobia is so destructive and heartbreaking. It took me 10 years to get diagnosed with EDS because doctors insisted I just needed to lose weight for my hips to stop hurting (one said this even when my BMI classed me as underweight)

Final bump for this - as usual writing about being fat means receiving a lot of awful feedback about how I’m disgusting/should die, but more importantly I’ve also received some messages from people who it helped, who also know how bad it is out there. I won’t be stopping 🫡
Bec Shaw@Brocklesnitch

My column this week is about how fucking BAD the body image/fatphobic vibes are at the moment and how other people need to engage before it destroys us all. I don’t ever insist you read my stuff but I’d love you to read this one theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

@StrewthQueen The ridiculously high costs also mean that it's very difficult to qualify for them. My dad had Crohn's disease and his immunosuppression meant that he was developing skin cancers, but he had to jump through so many hoops to qualify for more targeted immunosuppression

@skinnyprinsess @Luv2Hailee I have a friend with an autistic child who had severe ARFID and became dangerously underweight. They got help and treatment at the local hospital and now her child is gaining weight and excited about food. It's so important to get help and support so you can support your child

they let her get up throughout the entire night, NO boundaries or bed times whatsoever, she chooses when to eat so at some point she hadn’t eaten in TWO days. she’s non verbal and doesn’t know how to play / share with other kids. i think her mom thinks she’s doing a ‘great job’ because her mom is also autistic and grew up without it being acknowledged. and now she’s absolutely ruining her child under the disguise of helping her autism lol

@ChicknDiddy @AdamBandt From the Department of Health's Medical Cost Finder, 66% of patients in 2022-23 faced out-of-pocket costs for IUD insertion, with the typical cost being $230. Given they last 5-10 years they're a really cost-effective option but the upfront cost is prohibitive for many people

Today the Greens have announced our plan to provide women with free access to contraceptives. There are 4.8 million women in Australia using contraceptives. Our policy would make sure they can access the contraception that works for them, regardless of their bank balance.

The ambos did an incredible job keeping me calm and updated on what was happening. Whilst my partner ultimately died I'm forever grateful for the ambos taking such good care of both of us, and it brings me a lot of comfort knowing that absolutely everything was done to maximise
