@SteveMascord It was the Madchester scene that got to me. Happy Mondays, Stone Roses - my first proper gig was the Charlatans. I was 15 - that was my version of punk. Probably the end of bands being like gangs that fans would devote to. I can't help being drawn back in - sounds of nostalgia.

I am as excited about new music as I was in 1989. But it’s the new Black Crowes album or a new band like Whiskey Myers - not Olivia Whatsherface. I’ve built a bubble to keep 1989 and rock IN and I’m proud of my bubble.

@SteveMascord I try to occasionally and do pick up some gems on 6 music and off my kids but really, 90% of the music I listen to is from between 1989 and 1999. End of school and before marriage.

Lots of people my age listen to current pop music. I absolutely don’t. I don’t listen to pop radio, I take my own music to the gym and when I drive. I’m not exposed to it.

@SteveMascord During the 70’s there were loads of blackouts in the UK - all due to strikes I think? I remember walking to my Aunty’s house with candles, all the houses were in darkness and all the street lights out too.

I mean through a power outage, not through them being turned off!

Ellery Hanley, Joe Lydon, Paul Sculthorpe, James Roby and Sam Tomkins are part of the new Man of Steel voting panel will meet on three separate occasions throughout the season to evaluate the competition’s leading performers. Hanley, Sculthorpe, Lydon, Roby and Tomkins will together assess candidates after Round 9 (April 26), Round 18 (July 12) and the final Round 27 (September 11). Following each meeting a shortlist of the leading performers from that block of games will be publicly announced. At the end of the regular campaign, the panel will meet again to draw together a final shortlist for the Man of Steel and begin deliberations on the eventual outcome.

@NoHelmetsReq @johnnyddavidson I was talking about the RFL rather than the clubs but your point stands - you get what you pay for. There are many people, however with League close to their hearts who would help, yet there seems to be a mistrust of experts, opting for the fella from down the hall instead.

@johnnyddavidson @FD_DaveH The core issue is Pro RL finances in the UK were always on a par with 3rd tier football. Now it’s nearer 4th tier. I work in those divisions and can assure all RL fans that the brain drain from those clubs is just as significant. Pay peanuts>get great kids>who leave for more £!

@LizWebsterSBF Is the point of this waffle ironic? He's clearly suffering from dementia and his focus is of a psychiatric hospital he used to look at as a kid? ...before he played pro baseball.

He cannot hold a line of thought. He cannot land a point. He cannot communicate seriousness. And yet global markets, alliances and security are being forced to react in real time to this kind of performance. A superpower led by a man delivering incoherent childhood anecdotes instead of policy and global markets are expected to take it seriously. This is what institutional collapse looks like.

@SteveMascord League isn’t shrinking, SuperLeague’s doing well with good attendances. That’s just the way sport is going. I can see amateur UK sport going the same way as in the US. Play til Uni then play pro or stop. Such a shame as playing with your mates as a young adult is the best bit.

You should hope the sport gets big enough so you are not missed. If no-one notices you’re not going, things are going well.
