Learnt with deep shock and profound sorrow that we have lost 16 girls of Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil while scores others have been injured in a fire tragedy at school. To lose young girls, full of hope and dreams for the future, in such a cruel and painful way is stark reminder of how fleeting life on earth is. Condolences to the bereaved families, quick recovery to the injured. The Government stands with all those affected, and is committed to support the school community to come to terms with this tragedy. May the souls of our children who have perished find rest in eternity.

GETURI, KITUTU CHACHE NORTH CONSTITUENCY, KISII COUNTY, KENYA MONDAY, MAY 25, 2026 Major policy interventions have been undertaken since 2022 to reform and improve the education sector. The education budget has been increased annually from 500 billion shillings in 2022 to 702 billion shillings in the just ending financial year, and it will hit a historic 765 billion shillings in the oncoming fiscal year starting July 1. The clarity of the Competence Based Education and Training (CBET) recruitment of a record 100,000 teachers in four years, construction of 23,000 classrooms and 1,600 laboratories are a major boost to school infrastructure for better educational outcomes. Key reforms in tertiary institutions including the ongoing construction and equipment of at least one technical training institute per Constituency, introduction of a modular based curriculum, the recognition of prior learning, the dual training policy and the reduction of fees from 105,000 shillings a year to 87,000 shillings a year, have cumulatively increased total enrollment from 297,000 students in 2022 to 718,000 currently. The new student centered University Funding Model is aimed at ensuring that no student misses University education due to lack of fees, and has helped universities, some of which were almost becoming insolvent. The Government is doing all it can to ensure all children access quality and relevant education, as the surest way of achieving a more equitable society and fast tracking national development. Commissioned Geturi School in Mosocho, Kisii County, built with funding of the National Government Constituency Development Fund, under the patronage of Japhet Nyakundi, the MP for Kitutu Chache North Constituency. With Japheth Nyakundi (Kitutu Chache North), Dr Daniel Manduku ( Nyaribari Masaba), Dorice Donya (Woman Rep, Kisii), Jerusha Momanyi (Woman Rep, Nyamira) and Sen Elsie Okenyuri (Nominated). The Kisii Deputy Governor Elijah Obebo, MCAs, parents teachers, and students were present.
