"Fletcher High School in Gwelo (now Gweru) was always the first choice for my secondary education. My elder brother, George Mudavanhu, had attended Fletcher and my parents were determined to have me enrol at the same school. A top drawer school for African boys back in the day, I was determined to get a Form One place at Fletcher High School when I sat for my Grade 7 examinations in 1975. My results were excellent and I easily secured a boarding place at Fletcher. The termly boarding fees were $29. The boarding hostels were very clean and tidy and we were provided with bed linen. The food in the dining hall was on another level. Academic and sporting standards were extremely high and obviously, Fletcher was a prestigious educational institution. I quickly made friends with Johnson Dondo (now late). May his soul continue to rest in peace. Basically, my very first stay in an urban environment was when I enrolled at Fletcher for my secondary education. I'm essentially a rural guy from Mushayavanhu business centre. The six quality years that I spent at Fletcher literally changed my life. We were introduced to sports like basketball and swimming, something that I could only dream of in rural Gutu. Debating was one of my key strengths and as such, I became a member of the school debating club. When I was in Form 2 in 1977, we attended a debating competition at Chaplin High School. Then, Chaplin was an all-white school. We were made to sit on a bench separate from the white students at Chaplin in their school. That was my first direct experience of racial discrimination and to this very day, that fateful experience shaped my views about race and politics. The crema dela creme of talented African boys formed the bulk of the student body at Fletcher. It was a very competitive environment. Fletcher had exerting academic and sporting standards and it was, indeed, a privilege to be a student at such a school. Mr.Motsisi, nicknamed Mesh Mesh, was the school headmaster. He was a no-nonsense disciplinarian who routinely meted out corporal punishment for any form of errant behaviour. When I look back, I can proudly say Fletcher High School made me." So my boy, Stanley Jnr on his way to Spain for football meets one of his heroes Roberto Firmino a legend of @LFC in Doha. He is excited, he says he is inspired. All the best my boy. By the way the boy has a lethal left foot and he is only 13.
